New York September 2 Max Steuer a noted New York lawyer testified in the Tammany racket conspiracy trial that James J Hines asked him in 1938 to adjust a federal income tax case against Dutch Schultz Steuer said he would take the case only if it was in the hands of the United States attorney He said he spoke with George Medalie then supervisor of Dewey and was told the matter could not be adjusted He testified he later spoke with Hines about the matter and denied knowledge that Schultz was in fact the Dutchman Earlier wire tap records were read showing a conversation between Dixie Davis and a man identified as Jim The testimony described a call asking for 500 He noted Davis said yes and mentioned going downtown with John ny Dietz and sending Ed Nolley over The session began with cross examination by Lloyd Stryker and detective Julius Salke then read a wire tapped conversation The record indicated a call at 8 30 a m September 28 1933 about a year after Hines joined the Schultz mob as political fixer for 500 a week The witness said he had met Davis before tapping the gang lawyers phone and knew his voice He added he never got Schultz and did not know Continued on Page Two

Pay No Light Bills Advised In Chattanooga Strike
Chattanooga central labor body representing AFL unions urged members to refuse payment of light bills until settle the Tennessee Electric Power Co linemen strike. Curtis Sims said 350 union reps adopted the stance and a second resolution blamed Silas Williams TEPC attorney for blocking negotiations. Since the 11 day strike began the utility cites about 30 damaged lines and transmitters, which union spokesmen deny.

The mangled body of an unidentified white man was found beside the Southern Railway tracks three miles west of Decatur at 7 30 this morning.
