The forecast shows little temperature change with a cooler forenoon and scattered thin clouds in the southwest this afternoon. Cotton prices quoted: strict mid 20.60, middling 20.40, strict low 19.20, low 15.95. Local items include promotions, military leave notices, and residents traveling or visiting relatives in Decatur, Birmingham, Columbus, and nearby towns.
Great fleets of RAF heavy bombers pounded Berlin in a 45 minute assault with incendiaries and high explosives as Canada joined the attack. Losses included 47 bombers and one fighter, while targets across France and the Low Countries were struck.
George T. Woodruff, chief clerk of the War Price and Rationing Board, announced old B and C gasoline ration books expired yesterday must be exchanged for new forms. New coupons carry lens print and a large letter denoting the book, with "Mileage Ration" printed above. Adequate B book supply exists at the rationing office and new C books were expected today.
Mary Grigsby charged with assault with intent in connection with the shooting of Fred Shaw, 29, of 604 East Lafayette Street. Shaw treated at Benevolent hospital. warrant issued by Justice B C Meadows. Grigsby held without bond.
A large group, including Paul Simpson Keltner and many others, departed from Morgan County Draft Board No. 1 this morning for the induction and recruitment center at Fort McClellan. The roster lists dozens of draftees headed for military service.
The Bel gian news agency reports that armed Belgian patriots released Jewish prisoners in a raid. Details and locations are sparse with no names or dates confirmed.
American Flying Fortresses fly 1000 miles from Northwest Africa to hit Pisa including the railway station and factory. Medium bombers strike Salerno Cosenza and Catanzaro rail lines. Liberators in the Middle East pound Pescara rail hubs as Cairo reports heavy fires. Ten enemy fighters downed in direct hits. British battleships support daylight strikes.
Allied bombers of the Northwest African Air Force attacked Pisa Tuesday night, targeting the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The tower, begun in 1173 and completed in 1350, leans about 16 feet and continues to tilt despite cement injections in 1932. Scientists attribute the tilt to shifting clay soil beneath the foundation.
Allied naval forces including Nelson Rodney Orion and multiple destroyers bombarded coastal batteries near Reggio Calabria and Cape Ba area on the Strait of Messina.
