Colonel Burke's perilous WWII voyage and escape ordeal
Burke rose from captain to colonel through the Persian service and Merchant Marine after Pearl Harbor. His freighter carried tea quinine rubber and general goods worth about five million dollars before being torpedoed near Ceylon. Seventeen days adrift on five rafts with 72 sailors and 12 soldiers ended when rescued by British merchants in the South Pacific and returned to the United States.
