There was little change in the industrial employment situation in August from the prior month with expansion in seasonal work. Cotton-field and sugar-beet labor rose in southern areas while vegetable and fruit canning boosted local jobs. highway construction and municipal projects added many positions. Some factories cut back, especially in autos, iron and steel, radios, and rubber goods, while textiles and silk mills showed modest gains. Mining remained greatly curtailed and many miners were idle.
