Governor George Wallace has filed to the Alabama Supreme Court seeking a ruling on the legality of appointing Rep. Edsel Moore of Moulton as circuit judge of the new court district. The move was learned Friday.
State Sen Ed Horton assails national parties at a luncheon urging a two party system while noting 1964 seismic shifts. In Montgomery, Richard Neal reports the governor seeks an advisory opinion on a court matter as Moore seeks circuit judge appointment. Firefighters from the Courtland department battled a wind driven grass fire near Hillsboro for hours, saving two nearby houses owned by W. C. and Carmer McBride Jr. Two Trinity teenagers aided by warning the resident of danger. Fire officials said rain was hoped for overnight to curb the blaze.
Sgt Maj William O Wooldridge received the formal adoption of his first infantry division by Birmingham in a ceremony attended by white and Negro leaders. He noted the division has two missions in Viet Nam to kill Viet Cong and to make friends, promising to tell soldiers of Birmingham’s warmth upon his return. Secretary of State Dean Rusk said North Viet Nam blocked efforts to end the war by excluding terms the United States would seek to free South Viet Nam from Communist aggression. He warned Hanoi may be hardening its stance on unconditional talks. The remarks came at a Washington news conference.

Three women held more than three hours during the Idalou State Bank robbery escaped minutes before the robbers were captured by police. The women, Mrs C W Surratt Mrs Bobby Bartlett and Mrs Ray Everett, were among six bank employees held captive as the trio fled with money before a prearranged escape car. The robbers released three men and then fled. the women signaled to police and jumped to safety behind a wall. The bandits were nabbed after the escape attempt.
