Six persons die when a Memphis to North Carolina auto sped in front of a Southern freight train at Belle Mina. Victims include William Bragaw his wife Louise their two daughters and the mothers of William and Louise. The crash occurs at 1 05 PM after the auto reportedly ran through the crossing at 50 to 60 mph. Signals were said to be functioning and witnesses noted 30 foot skid marks.
HIBBING Minn Nov 18 Santa and another man from Floodwood were fined $100 each in municipal court for cutting Yule trees on state land without permits. Herbert Santa 25 and Teno Hi etala 26 faced similar charges and paid the penalties.
Avery Taylor, chairman of the Christmas seal sale campaign, said more than 8,000 letters containing the seals will be mailed Monday morning. Each recipient will be asked to contribute $3 to fund tuberculosis fight efforts. See SEAL On Page 10.
Alabama supreme court sets hearing for next week to decide if injunction barring Western Electric workers from picketing Southern Bell exchanges in Alabama will stand. Hearing tentatively at 10 A.M. in Montgomery. About 175 Western Electric workers walked out in Alabama amid a nationwide strike for higher wages. union members at Southern Bell refused to cross picket lines.
U S infantry push toward Kaplan 21 miles from the Manchurian border in sub zero weather. The 17th regiment of the Seventh Division entered Kaplan with light resistance after a snowbound advance, American bombers had leveled the town, Reds fled northward, and a Red trap left 128 dead on Friday.
Morgan county winter circuit court opens Monday for four weeks of docketed trials with Circuit Judge James H. Crow Jr. presiding. An 18 member grand jury will be organized by Judge Crow and Circuit Solicitor George C. Johnson. The civil docket covers 64 cases. Arraignments for jail cases occur November 27 at 3 PM. Indictments set for trial the week of December 11. Court starts 9 AM Mondays and 8:30 AM on other days.
Senate Republicans warned Secretary of State Acheson of coming fights over foreign policy after his clash with Taft on reexamining Western Europe aid. Senator Knowland urged a resurvey of commitments from Taipei to Yugoslavia drew opposition to the administration’s China policy. The row foreshadows GOP moves against Acheson leadership on foreign policy on Capitol Hill.
Pro bate Judge T C Almon says 49 notices of appeals from condemnation assessments on U S 31 right of way from Lacon toward Hartselle have been filed. The state through county attorneys filed 30 appeals totaling 60 044 and 70 000 of 109 000 valuations have been challenged. See LAST on Page 2.
J C Penney signs long term lease for 606 608 Second Avenue in Decatur. Remodeling costs about 75000 dollars and the store is expected to open June 30 1952. Penney manager H H Higdon announced Saturday.
The GOP offers a rival to President Truman’s excess profits tax. Sponsored by Rep. Reed of New York the plan lets corporations choose either paying the excess profits tax or a 10 percent increase in the 45 percent corporate rate. The alternative must meet at least 50 percent of earnings if chosen. The measure runs through December 31 1952.
In Rockford Alabama on November 18 two men Char les Albert Reese 20 born Denver Co Thomas Howard Cowart 22 Coosa county and John Robert Evans 22 Michigan parole violator were held in Coosa county jail linked to a 2500 mile burglary and car theft spree. State Investigator WL Allen said they joined a third man in the middle West during a trip that stretched from the Great Lakes to Buffalo New York then into Canada and back down the East coast to the South. Authorities described a series of robberies and car thefts tied to the case as the men were located after returning to Alabama.
Sen. John Sparkman accuses Moscow of bulldozing the U N and warns the U N could not barter peace to meet Soviet demands. Vishinsky demands Chinese communists and a 10 point peace plan with veto restraint and atomic control before any world settlement. Sparkman says such terms would strip the U N of independence and force acceptance of unsafe atomic policies.
