Rep. John S. Monagan of Connecticut pressed Jerris Leonard head of LEAA to justify his defense of the Alabama Law Enforcement Plan as superior to at least 25 other states. The House subcommittee had just completed hearings on LEAA grant programs.
In a LEAA statement Leonard rejects misinterpretation of remarks on Alabama funding. He cites two subjects: problems found in the 1969 70 funds and improvements to the Criminal Justice Improvement Program. He notes the 1971 plan was revised after LEAA suggested changes and approved Aug 12. Monagan disputes overstate of nationwide abuses.
Decatur beat Huntsville 30 to 0 while Austin edged Walker 14 to 13 and Hazlewood tied Courtland 12 all. West Morgan posted 12 with Ardmore shutout 0 as Hartselle overwhelmed Deshler 41 to 0.
An elderly Trinity man, Rufus Grantland, 87, was struck by a car on Alabama 24 while walking to a West Morgan High School game. A separate drowning near Somerville claimed William B. Wallace, 53, while he fished, with authorities stating the driver was not at fault and the incident an unavoidable accident. Grantland, a former deputy, was described as a ardent West Morgan fan. his survivors include a widow, three sons, a daughter, three sisters, and two brothers. Authorities remained at the drowning scene for hours before the body was recovered by Flint Rescue Squad.
Cavender pled guilty to two counts of unlawful marijuana sale and received two concurrent two year sentences, added to a prior six year LSD conviction. He is eligible for parole in 32 months and will be jailed in state custody. His wife Connie looked on as he waived appeal on the LSD case.
Seven Danes arrive in Decatur to study the Tennessee Valley area. The Group Study Exchange team visits local industries and the Decatur City School System, tours the Tennessee River, and meets Rotary members. Participants include Arne Pedersen Jessen and others from Silkeborg Randers Aarhus.
President Nixon announced plans to pull 45 000 American soldiers out of South Vietnam by February 1 while keeping 139 000 in country. He tied further withdrawals to prisoner releases and a cease fire prospects and warned he cannot promise a breakthrough at Paris peace talks. Air power would back South Vietnamese forces until a settlement is reached or they can operate independently.
The Cahaba Shrine Temple convention expects 2000 Shriners in Decatur with initiation ceremonies at Decatur High School starting 8 a.m. 75 masons report for rites while wives attend refreshments at Decatur Inn. A 2 p.m. parade along downtown ends with the initiation at the high school. a Madison County Coliseum dance closes the event at 9 p.m.
