Pfc Odus B Powell of Alabama and Tec 5 Harold Farmer were killed in Ludwigshafen after protecting a woman from mistreatment by a Frenchman. The letter from 1st Lt Delbert S Harrell notes the deaths occurred during an authorized trip in French Occupied Territory and that Powell was buried in a military cemetery at St Avold France.

Mears Pleads Insanity In Wife Murder Case
Walter Mears indicted for the murder of Ada Mears pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity at arraignment before Judge A A Griffith in circuit court. Trial set for Thursday. The grand jury returned 48 indictments after reviewing 100 cases. Ada Mears was found dead June 8 in a pasture near Mouldon Heights with throat cuts and facial bruising. Other defendants named include Harold Glover indicted for robbery and attempted murder, and Melvin Hutson represents both Mears and Glover. Multiple cases of grand larceny, burglary, and arson were adjourned or set for trial, with several defendants pleading guilty and receiving penitentiary terms. The grand jury also reported members including Andrew A Means and Thomas L Morse.
