German and Italian actions deepen crisis as bombardment of Almeria triggers withdrawals from the 27 nation neutrality committee. Reports from London and Washington trace the saber rattling and reprisals amid Civil War tensions.
Rev. Oliver C. Cox delivered a Baccalaureate sermon at St. John's Episcopal church for the Decatur High School class of 95. He urged choosing the way of service over expediency and discussed America's second land of promise, social security, and national unity through serving others.
Wilbur Shaw, from Indianapolis, led the 500 mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway race at the 100 mile mark with an average speed of 117.087 mph, breaking his own previous 100 mile record. Herbert Ardinger and Louis Meyer followed in second and third as 30 of 33 starters remained. Jimmy Snyder dropped out with a broken transmission after 62 miles.
John F. Hamilton 65 prominent retired farmer died at his Rock Creek home. He had been ill a year and a half. Funeral at Rock Creek church with burial at Rock Creek cemetery. Survivors include wife and six brothers in Decatur Baileyton Rock Creek and Washington Indiana. He was born in Morgan County and longtime resident.
Decatur Rotary Club held an open meeting at Woodall's on Moulton road at noon. Next Monday's session at Lyons Hotel will be hosted by the community service committee. Guests included Karl Wal tersdorff, Huntsville club president, John Cooper, Hartselle club president, Dr. Arthur M. White of Hartselle, and Rev. Lewis H. Knight of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Eldred Beckstead of Riverton Utah said a bee caused him to lose control of his car in Salt Lake City. The crash damaged a steel light pole a small tree and three mailboxes with cuts and bruises to Beckstead.
John C. Campbell aged 41 a merchant civic leader and sportsman died Sunday in Chattanooga of heart trouble He was secretary treasurer of the Sum ter Fair and Stock Company of Tuscaloosa Alabama and general manager of a Chattanooga bakery.
By DAVID A. CHEAVENS Baylor University in Waco Texas awarded its ninety second annual commencement to the Keys quadruplets Mary Mona Leota and Roberta the first quartet to graduate from a college. The sisters wore dresses sewn by their mother and received teaching certificates. The Keys family and relatives from Texas and Oklahoma attended the ceremonies and watched as their grandmother and grandfather looked on.
The Keys sisters, famous descendants of a Morgan county family now in Oklahoma, retain ties to the Morgan area. Locals follow their careers with interest and hope the quadruplets visit Morgan county after finishing college.
Charles Bev Sparkman three and a half year old son of Mr and Mrs Dewey Sparkman died at the home 502 Eleventh Avenue West Saturday night after a week long illness of colitis. Funeral services at 3 this afternoon at Johnson Chapel led by Rev Dee Montgomery with Drinkard Howell of Hartselle in charge. Besides the parents a brother Roy survives.
Mrs T V Harrison aged local resident of 218 East Walnut was injured in a car collision in North Birmingham at 3 30 Friday afternoon. She is in Baughs Infirmary with head and chest bruises after being moved from Norwood Hospital by a McAfee and Young ambulance. Her daughter Mrs J H Johnson and granddaughters Misses Anne and Jacqueline Johnson were in the car. other occupants were shaken but untreated.
H D Harkreader longtime editor of The Daily is seriously ill in Palatka Florida where he works with A B Cordington former advertising manager of The Daily. Friends in Decatur hope for his early recovery and return to his desk.
A month long term of circuit court opened today with Judge W W Callahan presiding Civil cases will be heard first then the criminal docket Judge Callahan will charge the grand jury June 7. The investigating body convened in February is recalled for duty.
A conflict looms between the American Federation of Labor and the United Automobile Workers for Ford Motor Company workers and others. AFL official F. J. Dillon says Ford workers sought aid to oppose the UAW as plans for local automobile industry charters are discussed with CIO leader John Lewis.
Fifteen hundred prisoners from the state penitentiary will be moved to a tent city in Stringtown Oklahoma to supply labor for building permanent housing for a model trusty farm, Governor Marland announced.

Ashland Kentucky May 31 thieves stole from the locker of J T Norris associate editor of the Ashland Daily Independent. A notation described “one very fine smoking pipe” as the top item, with two ten dollar bills four one dollar bills and a fifty cent piece also taken. Norris is known for his collection of choice pipes among Kentucky newspaper men.
At Rocky Bottom 8 C May 31 the post office department says no applications were received for the village postmastership left vacant by a resignation. As a result the Rocky Bottom office will be discontinued.
German warships bombarded the Mediterranean port of Almeria in retaliation for the Ibiza attack on the Deutschland. The strike killed many and wounded dozens, heightening fears of a wider European war while London’s non intervention committee seeks to curb foreign involvement. Germany and Spain call the bombardment illegal while Spain says it began without warning.
Decatur Chapter No. 36 royal arch Masons held a barbecue dinner and regular session in the Masonic temple on Johnston street. Officers elected: W. B. Russell high priest, A. L. McCauley king, W. V. Pattillo scribe, W. H. Carter treasurer, J. D. Bush secretary, E. A. Oden captain of the host, L. B. Terry principal sojourner, J. F. Levin royal arch captain, A. C. McKnight sentinel. Pattillo and Oden live in Martelle, Terry in Hillsboro. The group expects a bright year with many young Masons likely to take royal arch degrees.
Rev. Allen Wilson state secretary of the Christian churches of Alabama and Rev. E. H. Wyle of the First Christian church Birmingham will speak at the First Christian church here Tuesday evening at 7 30. Members urged to attend and the public is invited to the service.
First Presbyterian church members discussed erecting a new manse to replace the one recently voted. They approved a $3,000 loan to supplement the existing building fund, enabling work to begin at the earliest date.

The Southside Baptist church opened a mission in a vacant Fourth Avenue store. Sunday services begin at 3 PM. Rev. I W Myers praised his congregation for their sympathy and support for mission work.
Rev. Harold Van Broekhoven of Dallas closed an engaging Bible topics lecture series at First Presbyterian Church. He spoke each morning at Central Baptist Church and each evening at First Casioian during the past week.
The regular June meeting of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce board of directors is set for Tuesday afternoon at four o’clock at the unit offices. Attendance of all board members is urged due to many important matters on the agenda.
Almeria along the Spanish coast faced a sudden bombardment by a German squadron. The Febus News Agency said more than 300 people were killed and hundreds wounded as over 200 shells exploded across the city in about 30 minutes. The strike hit the relief administration HQ a first aid station and a newspaper office. A heavy warship and four destroyers fired broadsides before coast batteries engaged them and a destroyer was believed hit.
Berlin said it would abstain from future London non intervention committee and control talks until guarantees against further incidents are given. The move followed the Almeria port destruction and the bombing of the Deutschland on Saturday dusk, which killed 23 German sailors and left eight missing.
The Tennessee River eased to a 21 foot gauge with no rainfall in the last 24 hours. Highs reached 94 and lows 74. Alabama and extreme north Florida see generally fair weather tonight and Tuesday with continued warmth. Tennessee experiences fair skies with warm conditions and possible locally under showers and cooler conditions in the far west tonight. Tuesday may bring local thundershowers and cooler air.
