Teenage newlyweds Melvin and Shirley Roden face a terminal cancer fate. Shirley Smith, 14, marries Melvin Roden, 17, in a small hospital chapel as cancer recurs after initial treatment. The story follows their brief joy and enduring bond amid ongoing care and a fundraising effort.
The Dow Jones average rose 2.38 percent to 700.44 as the market staged a three day rally. Traders voiced astonishment at the rapid rebound after a week marked by sharp declines Monday and Tuesday and gains on Wednesday Thursday and Friday.
Three people died and eight were injured in separate Friday crashes in North Alabama as the Memorial Day weekend began. Doris Faye Prince, six, was killed in Moulton when she darted in front of a car on Alabama 157 inside the city. James Harold Berry, 62, of Birmingham, died when his car struck a bridge pier on U S 31 north of Cullman. James Hulet Burrow, 17, of Cullman, died in Hanceville after a car lost control on rain slick roads. three others were injured.
Gov Albert Brewer's campaign for a full term ends as local supporters host a Homecoming Victory Rally at Decatur High School tonight with city and area tribute.
Former publisher Clark Hodges 74 of Moulton died Friday at home. Native of DeKalb County, he owned and published The Moulton Advertiser for 15 years before selling to Arthur Slaten. Funeral today at 1:30 p.m. at Moulton Baptist Church with burial in Albertville Cemetery.
Mobile police shot and killed Frank Brown, 46, during an exchange at a northside rooming house after he overpowered an officer, seized a pistol, and wounded another critically. A third patrolman was lightly wounded by a shotgun blast, while Brown, an employee of a Mobile supplier, had lived in the rooming house for about four weeks. Other residents noted recent return from California. Patrolman J W Smith had detained two men for speeding. the man allegedly refused to mail the fine and then attacked Smith. The abandoned car involved was described as stolen. Additional details continue on Page A-2.
President Nixon heads to the Western White House in San Clemente for a quiet holiday weekend with a mix of relaxation and heavy work. He spent a morning in discussions with Henry Kissinger on strategy in Southeast Asia including Cambodia.
Former Gov George Wallace and his daughter Lee campaign across Morgan and Decatur in Alabama with a 10 am downtown rally in Hartselle and a 11 am to 1 pm appearance at the Decatur headquarters. Wallace earlier greeted supporters in Hartselle Friday.
The Chamber of Commerce urges residents and businesses in Alabama to display the flag on election day to remind all citizens of their right and obligation to vote.
The nation honors fallen soldiers from Bunker Hill to Vietnam with Memorial Day ceremonies. Antiwar groups plan demonstrations in many cities while Senator Tower steps in for President Nixon to lay a wreath at Arlington. Nixon is in California for the weekend.
