Athens College President Dr. Frank Philpot says the college has an option on 74 acres near U S 31 for 120000 to build an athletic and physical education center. The land near Swan Creek would host a baseball diamond track and soccer field with a picnic area while the current athletic field becomes parking as part of a million dollar plus expansion.
U S Air Force Thunderchief jets attacked Hoa Lac air field west of Hanoi for the ninth time since April 24. Ground action was light with Memorial Day services reported by units. Returning pilots described heavy anti aircraft fire but no MIGs engaged the raid.

State Budget Officer Jake Jordan and State Personnel Director Stanley Frazier said they could manage with current funds.
Three men escaped from City Jail over the weekend and one returned on Sunday morning. Thomas Wood, 27, turned himself in about 9 30 am. Edward Eugene Rudowicz, 45, and Homer McFarland Jr., 20, remain at large. Police say a single jail window bar was sawed and a hacksaw may have been passed to the inmates. Police also seek a missing 18 year old from Decatur believed connected to McFarland.
SELMA Ala AP Former Dallas County Sheriff James Clark says he will bid for U.S. Senate next year. He notes incumbent Clark will run but declines to discuss re election. Wilson Baker, Selma safety director, gave no reason for opposing Hill.
Israel pledges to undergo every sacrifice to reopen the Gulf of Aqaba as Jordan and Egypt seal a five year defense treaty. King Hussein visits Cairo to sign the pact linking the two nations in case of an Israeli attack.
Americans observe Memorial Day with ceremonies from Philadelphia aboard a historic battleship to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington. The day echoes the sacrifices of the past as streets and squares across the country mark the loss and honor of fallen service members.
In Chicago the Clergy and Laymen Concerned About Vietnam expect over 1000 people for the second annual Memorial Day service for peace. In Washington the Ad Hoc Veterans' Committee for Memorial Day Peace Action plans a procession with muffled drums and black draped flags to protest the war.
Birmingham architect George W. Qualls was awarded the $25 million Birmingham-Jefferson County Civic Center contract after his design won a national contest. In Nigeria, Lt. Col. C. C. Ojukwu declared Eastern Region independence as Biafra, while Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon denounced secession and ordered mobilization.
