A Recorder's Court session is set this afternoon for a defendant charged with parking in an alley. Local notes report hospital admissions, births, and discharges at Decatur General and Hamill Clinic, plus Red Cross swimming lessons planning and a spring curb market opening.
Johnny Parsons of Van Nuys California wins the 34th Memorial Day 500 at Indianapolis after rain halted the race at 340 miles. He set a record pace averaging 126.038 mph in the Wynn friction proofing special, finishing a lap ahead of Jack McGrath of Alhambra California in the Hinkle special.
Freder ick Chase Taylor known as Colonel Lemuel Q. Stoopnagle is dead at 52 from a heart ailment at New England Baptist hospital. The comedian rose after a 1929 stock market crash misstep and found radio fame in 1930 with Budd Hulick, creating a national network program until 1937. He later featured in shows and wrote several books.
Mauri Rose’s race car caught fire in the pits while refueling as he ran second in the Memorial Day 500 mile race. The blaze was extinguished with chemicals and Rose pursued leader Johnny Parsons. A crew member suffered burnt pants, which he removed quickly before spectators.
A 51 year old Pensacola laborer Edward Carrol Noble was arrested by the FBI on federal extortion charges. He allegedly demanded 1000 dollars from 73 year old Augustin Teichmann threatening acid creosote. Noble admitted writing the letter but said he needed the cash for his two invalid sons and is held for grand jury action.
Lea Fray vice president S. A. Steere held talks with local labor leaders on the opening of a new mill. The discussions aimed to address working conditions and union relations as operations near start-up.
Light voting expected statewide as runoffs determine races in the second democratic primary. Montgomery County shows heavier turnout due to a tight state senate contest. The sole state race features Vernon St John of Opp versus Bill Terry of Hale County for State Superintendent of Education. Local contests include sheriff, Board of Revenue and Control chair, and county school board seats.
The Daily invites the public to attend the newspaper election party this evening. Election officials from Morgan county boxes are asked to telephone The Daily once the count finishes. The AP wire will relay state race results and district run offs as count speeds with ballot brevity.

A blaze tore through an oil storage depot in North Bay Ontario on May 30 sending residents fleeing as explosions rocked the area. Gasoline drums and naphtha containers burst into flames while police feared the main tanks could blow, showering flaming fuel over the city outskirts.
The Proctor Fund raised by The Decatur Daily reached 84966.20 today with donations from many sources. Hugh Curry on behalf of L and N Em ployes at Oakworth yards gave 94.00, aiding the family left destitute after a fire that destroyed their home and hospitalizing the mother and two children. Oliver J. Shepard’s signature accompanied a 50.00 check from the state highway equipment department. Goodyear Plant No 3 first shift workers contributed 32.50. Miss Annie Wheeler of Wheeler donated 50. Falkville sent a note urging readers to add this small token to the effort. See PROCTOR on Page 2.
During a brief Memorial Day service Rev. John A. Troxler urged a memorial rock engraved with Peace as a pledge to uphold human dignity and freedom. The Decatur American Legion Auxiliary Unit 15 held the ceremony at the World War II memorial on the Morgan County courthouse lawn with wreaths and flowers honoring war dead.
In September 1938 three hundred thirty four first graders started school in Decatur. Next Monday ninety two of that group are expected to receive high school diplomas. The retiring class recalls a journey from frightened six year olds to a closely knit senior cohort facing an uncertain future.

The class of 1950 will be the last to graduate from Riverside High as Decatur prepares to move to a new million dollar junior-senior high school next year. Students anticipate the grand building in operation while the Red Raiders boast an undefeated three-year football run and strong records elsewhere.
A 38 year old musician died and a young woman companion was severely injured when a borrowed car overturned near Selma Alabama early today. Highway Patrolman L H Hudson identified the deceased as Walter J Buddy George formerly of Ashville Kentucky with no street address available. Elizabeth Adams a Selma wait...
In Tokyo four American military observers were attacked by a communist led crowd at a rally after a notebook was snatched from a Japanese plainclothesman. The mob later arrested eight Japanese as police dispersed the scene at Hibara park.
A 22 year old Birmingham woman Davey Jean Mahaffey drowned while swimming in a pond northeast of Selma. Coroner Bernard Reynolds ruled accidental drowning. She swam ahead of companions and disappeared after a cramp. The body was recovered minutes later and CPR attempted before pronouncement.
