New Orleans May 20 cotton rose after Secretary Wallace announced acreage reduction via leasing. October futures climbed 31 points to a yearly high as early profit taking faded. Stocks on the New York exchange moved irregularly amid brisk trading with rails and utilities steady and wheat unsettled.
A plan to lease cotton planted land is discussed with an estimated 150 million dollars in payments to growers to support cotton under the new farm law. A. C. Cobb is to return this week from a South survey and talks with growers. Secretary Wallace says public hearings for the new law begin next Monday on a trade agreement fixing Chicago milk market prices.
Only 10 offenders appeared in police court this morning, nine drunkards and one gamer. Seven Whites and three negroes were arraigned. all cases involve drunkenness except one negro charged with gaming.
Johnnie Roberts and Dan Green of the Second avenue A. and P. store were visiting friends and relatives in Birmingham on Sunday.
The report notes zero precipitation in the 24 hours ending at seven this morning. No rainfall occurred during the specified period, indicating dry conditions.
Sixteen Decatur residents were bitten by a rabid dog over the weekend and ordered to take preventive treatments. The Tennessee Valley authority issued 41 anti rabies treatments in the past week, with 16 for Decatur residents and others sent to nearby towns for analysis. About 1500 people gathered in Falkville for Homecoming Day activities at the high school auditorium. A noon dinner featuring Southern cuisine was prepared by Parkville residents for all attendees. Musical programs included renowned singers from Morgan and nearby counties.
SELMA Ala May 20 A farmer T Lewis is held in Dallas county jail on charges of slaying former sheriff Maury Willoughby of Lowndes county near here last night in an ambuscade. Sheriff Tucker said the shooting was a family affair. Lewis surrendered with the claim he killed Willoughby because he had been going with his wife.
A meeting of persons interested in the anti tuberculosis campaign will be held this evening at 7 30 in the chamber of commerce. The public is invited to attend. The event was postponed from a previously scheduled date.
Members of the local post of the American Legion installed a large exhaust fan at Martin Arena to keep attendees comfortable during programs in torrid weather.
Washington May 23 AP President Roosevelt will keep William Woodin as treasury secretary despite his name appearing on Morgan & Co. preferred customers list He will maintain the cabinet and aides to manage the economic emergency and vast regulatory powers Woodin said he has not resigned and would leave only if his presence hindered national progress
President Roosevelt urged the senate banking committee to push the Morgan Company and private bankers inquiry without limit and with full committee confidence. Senator Glass said he received a threat letter over his Pecora questions as the investigation resumes Wednesday.
A Moye, who recently underwent a serious operation at Benevolent hospital, continues to improve at his home. He is not expected to be up for two more weeks.
About 1,000 workers were added to Alabama trial payrolls as production rose in steel and textile plants. Anniston textile strikes ended with workers allowed to organize and 400 returning. Utica Knitting Mill wage talks unresolved. Steel output up for ninth week as rails, farm tools, autos push demand and production.
The Moulton Lions opened their season with a social hour attended by Lions families and guests. Guests included Henneberger of the U.S. Forest Service, Mrs. Henneberger and two daughters, Lieutenants Edmundson Erqnehart and McLemore of the U.S. Army, Fred Redman and wife, and Mrs. Dewey Hightower. The event featured business briefly before a social hour with invitations for future visits to Moulton.
Plans are advancing for a daily vacation Bible school to be convened at Westminster Presbyterian church next Monday. Courses in Bible instruction will be offered each morning.
Delaware voters approve repeal of the 18th Amendment in unofficial returns showing 45 396 for repeal and 13 236 against for 17 delegates at large to the repeal convention. Wilmington remains wet. statewide dry by local option. Repeal convention set for June 24 at Dover.
About 250 forestry recruits arrived in Decatur early morning on a L and N train en route to Camp No 1 at the national forest reserve south of Moulton. They unloaded 45000 pounds of equipment, set up a field kitchen, prepared breakfast, and departed without leaving any litter.
Two year old Raymond Nesmith son of Mr and Mrs Johnnie Nesmith of 506 Eleventh Avenue West swallowed broken glass Sunday afternoon. He was rushed to a physician but remained in a critical condition today.
Summer school opened this morning at Central high with Principal H. E. Williams and staff in charge. Courses include plane geometry American history junior algebra world history and high school English. Students may enroll for six weeks or three months and regular work begins tomorrow at 8 o clock.
Music lovers in Decatur and vicinity anticipate the Riverside auditorium program by the Woman's College Glee Club under the Women's Music Study club and the Parent Teachers Association. The 30-voice group is a major Southern college ensemble with a varied program.
Lamar Moye, who underwent a minor operation at Benevolenta hospital last week, was discharged Saturday and is recovering nicely at home.
Dr. W. Hatchett, Madison county health officer from Huntsville, is in Decatur today. Sisters refers to local health event or meeting.
Miss McElroy, a tall blue eyed girl, was released after a $30,000 ransom payment in a Kansas City kidnapping case. Two masked men abducted her from the Country Club district, held her overnight in a basement, and released her at Milburn Golf Club after the ransom was paid on a lonely road near Kansas City, Kansas.
The World Club gathered Sunday afternoon at 2:30 with the president opening the meeting in song. Edith May Schimmel and Miss Chris Jones shared stories while George Moye recited a poem. After the lesson the group enjoyed a social hour.
Miss Rubie Lockwell came back Tuesday after spending several weeks visiting friends and relatives in Tuscumbia.
Miss Clovis Babbler returns to her duties at the probate office after several days of illness. Friends express relief at her speedy recovery and prompt return to work.
Miss Nell Rowe returns home on Moulton Street after undergoing a ton- Silar operation at Beugh's infirmary.
J M McBrayer 46 a Cullman county farmer died from head injuries after a sedan struck him and two others near Flint Creek Slough Bridge six miles south of Decatur. Driver fled the scene as Drinkard and Robertson were wounded and hospitalized. Funeral arrangements set for Cross Roads cemetery Cullman county.
