Weather outlook stays mild with scattered thundershowers in southern and western areas. Religious events span multiple Decatur churches with sermons by Dr P D Wilson Rev John A Troxler and Rev W W Glass. Community notices include hospital admissions permit for a home addition and a court appearance today.
President Truman refused a voluntary compliance FEPC proposal and insisted on compulsory enforcement. He noted existing voluntary FEPC and said he would not accept a voluntary compromise, a stance angrily viewed by Southern Democrats who opposed civil rights measures and affected 1948 electoral support.
The story reports the death of 12 year old Maxine Proctor after a house fire that burned their Courtland home. Her siblings O'Neal and 15 year old Tierney also suffered injuries while doctors, blood donors, and Red Cross workers tried to save them. Donations and community aid supported the family as relatives cope with their loss.

Two Falkville area youths are in Morgan county jail on grand larceny charges. The pair, identified as R. Fricks, 18, and Thomas Lingle, 20, were taken into custody Wednesday.
A wildcat strike by AFL Laborers and Hodcarriers union members halted the $227 million Oak Ridge atomic plant project. About 3,000 workers stopped work, picket lines formed at entrances, and the Atomic Energy Commission warned of unclear causes as arbitration had just concluded on wage disputes.
A 40 year old Lawrence county Black man Paul Davis is held on warrants charging attempted serious offense and breaking into an occupied dwelling. Four affidavits sworn before Probate Judge Mc Johnson this week. no hearings or bonds set. Sheriff Byars says Davis tied into a break in at a white family home slapping a woman and knocking down her child while seeking his wife who hid in the house. The incident occurred two and a half miles north of Moulton on May 20.
The Public Service Housing Administration announced allocations of 50 low rent units to Guntersville Alabama and 60 to Brownsville Tennessee. The agency said $20,000 loans were approved to assist housing programs in those communities.
In Alabama Governor James E. Folsom denied mercy to Dorsey Palmore, a 23 year old Covington County man, while Charley Smith of Mobile faced a final clemency hearing. Palmore’s bid for life followed a self defense killing of his wife. Smith awaits a ruling as both men face Kilby prison’s electric chair.
A three vehicle crash about six miles south of Somerville involved a Cullman Fairview high school senior class trip to Hatfield Lake. Geraldine Ray suffered minor cuts. Ollie Fowler and Willis Rogers had minor injuries. Driver Kenneth Barnett and Hamner’s vehicle were among those in the collision on Alabama 67 near U S 31.
Decatur retail grocers will decide Thursday afternoon hours individually. D E Frederick chairman of the retail merchants division said the group met at 10 A M at the Chamber of Commerce and decided to leave the choice to each merchant, adding that they would not compel anyone to act.
Gov. James E. Folsom and aides predict a special session to handle reapportionment and senate confirmations. Aug. 8 elections will fill four vacancies in Bullock Jackson and Dallas counties and a fifth district seat in Jackson Marshall counties may also be filled. Some observers say lawmakers could be recalled sooner.
Birmingham Alabama May 25. An ATU agent said a moonshiner near Mountain Brook tapped the Birmingham water works main line to feed a 1200 gallon still. Agents arrived as a lookout sounded the alarm. Twelve gallons of corn and 1200 gallons of mash were seized.
President Truman’s shakeup elevates the Commerce Department to peak prestige in its 47-year history. Secretary Charles Sawyer becomes supervising head of maritime affairs and could oversee the Reconstruction Finance Corporation lending operations. He would lead a $2 billion agency with vast industry and government coordination duties.
The body of William Sutton Black, 46, of Albertville, was found today in Guntersville Lake after he leaped into the water following a gasoline explosion on a small boat. Funeral services will be held Saturday at Shiloh Cemetery in Etowah County. Surviving are his widow Adell Black and three sons, William, Hekmene, and Hubert, plus his parents L Black of Gadsden and family connections.
