Uninsured Driver Fee Funds Auto Insurance Aid

House Judiciary Committee clears a measure to require uninsured motorists to pay a $20 fee before obtaining a car tag. The funds would finance insurance for others, not cover the claimant’s injuries. A compensatory damages bill would base fatal accident claims on lost earnings of the husband or father. Senate Banking Committee backs a bill to let banks charge a flat 8 percent annual interest on installment loans, with precomputed interest on the full loan amount. Opponents warn true rates could reach about 15 percent for new car buyers and worry small lenders.
