NORAD at Crossroads as Defense Needs Change
NORAD faces a choice between upgrading to counter new missile threats or remaining a warning system. With past emphasis on bomber defense, experts note no airtight defense against ICBMs, while plans like the Sentinel missile defense aim to shield against limited attacks. Defense policy shifts hinge on Washington decisions and evolving threat assessments.

Sentinel and layered defense plans across NORAD era debate
Commanders urge 25 to 75 ICBMs by mid 1970s, while a modernized air defense centered on airborne radar is proposed. The Pentagon seeks to scrap many land based radars and older jets for a new system, but the Senate balks over using F-106s versus F-12s. Canada weighs modernization but rejects deploying Sentinel radars or nuclear missiles on its soil. The US intends a fortified defense complex costing 142 million dollars with deep underground protection and rapid emergency access.
