NAACP Loses UA Round in Birmingham
In Birmingham on May 17 AP reports U S District Judge H H Duc e released files of students who applied since last February. The NAACP sought to prove Dean of Admissions Hubert A Mate discriminated against three Negro applicants amid a 1955 injunction that allowed Autherine Lucy to enroll. Judge Grooms ordered Mate to show cause next Tuesday why he should not be held in contempt for noncompliance. Three Negro students seek transfer to the University alleging denial of spring quarter applications on racial grounds.
