Alabama Supreme Court Deliberates Birmingham Government Case
The Alabama Supreme Court heard 90 minutes of arguments on which city government legally rules Birmingham. Justices gave no immediate ruling, with decision expected soon. The dispute centers on conflicting acts about new government timing after Birmingham’s November vote changing from city commission to mayor council. Boutwell, elected mayor, argues a 1955 local act mandates immediate office. Connor and others cite a 1959 state act for completing term through October 1965.
