Mrs Gordon Cooper began preparations to fly to Honolulu with her two daughters after received green light for 22 orbit mission. The Houston family will join Cooper if his 34 hour 22 orbit flight ends as planned. The women watched launch on multiple TVs and greeted astronaut wives at home.
The orbit by orbit log from Cape Canaveral chronicles Gordon Cooper's 22 orbit Mercury mission. It notes televised images, azimuths over Perth and California, a drifting beacon experiment, cabin temp checks, fuel and power readings, sleep periods, suit temperature resets, oxygen use, and MIT horizon photography for guidance research.
NASA explains orbit confusion by distinguishing Keplerian and earth fixed orbits. Cooper’s 22 orbit mission was counted as almost 22 earth fixed revolutions, though in standard terms he completes more than 23 Keplerian orbits before returning to Earth. Mercury Control notes the Keplerian measure is a pure space path, while the earth fixed count uses a Cape Canaveral reference line.
