In Tuscaloosa on May 13 the Alabama Federation of Labor voted 330 to 321 to remove president J. L. Hurst and secretary C. G. Griffin from office temporarily amid charges of malfeasance. The executive committee will present final recommendations tomorrow at the three day convention.
Decatur residents show strong interest in the census re-check now under way, as Decatur and Dothan contend for top counts. The change is believed to tilt in Decatur’s favor against the Queen City of the Wire Grass.
Rev. E. N. Hart, pastor of West Wilmister Presbyterian Church, was elected commissioner to the general assembly meeting in Cincinnati May 22. He follows Rev. A. H. Manly and Rev. J. R. Crawford as commissioner and alternate. Dr. J. W. Caldwell of Huntsville was elected alternate, and J. R. Dozier of Haleyville is the lay delegate to the assembly.
Cadet Christian Keener Cagle resigned from the United States Military Academy at West Point after presenting a certificate that he was married. Army officials forecast immediate dismissal following reports of his 1928 marriage in Gretna Louisiana to Marion Munford Haile, with registration details and prior disciplinary record cited.
Nearly fifty Kiwanians and their wives gather in Cullman for the Inter-City meeting despite steady morning rain. Kiwanis Governor Dave Edington of Mobile was slated to speak, with an entertaining program for visiting ladies including a picture show card games and a dance. Additional members unable to attend by morning plan to join later, boosting night attendance.
News arrives of S. S. Blair death in Mt. Holly New Jersey. Blair was a prominent educator and father of J. E. Blair former Decatur resident. Funeral services set for Wednesday at Guilford College North Carolina where he long served on the faculty.
Large crowds continue to hear Rev. L Pryor Royer visiting evangelist at the Southside Baptist church. He conducts successful services with meetings scheduled twice daily throughout the week.
The Decatur Pilot Club contest closes at noon Wednesday with entrants collecting tickets from merchants between 12 and 1 pm. Contestants will be stationed at the Y M C A building and at the entrance at 1 pm, aiming to finish ticket heats by 3 pm so the winner can be crowned before the 4 pm parade. The march routes from the Y M C A down Second avenue to Ferry, Ferry to Church, up Church to Bank, down Bank to Lee, along Lee to Second, and to the assembly point at the Y M C A. Expect crowds along the parade route tomorrow afternoon.
New York May 13 Pleading not guilty to a second degree murder indictment James Mathew Maxon Jr son of the bishop coadjutor of Tennessee was held in 15000 bail when arraigned in general session court. He killed David Paynter during a house brawl last month and has been jailed since April 18. The indictment was returned last Friday.
Local Presbyterian leaders report the proposal to allow women to become elders has passed a majority of Presbyteries with 151 votes for and 114 against. The licensed evangelist measure remains in doubt while Huntsville Presbytery, including Decatur, voted against changing women s church status.
Mrs. D. C. Almon is the guest of her daughter Mrs. James Stewart in Gadsden and expects to spend several days there.
Harry Rohm a 45 year old Richmond leather merchant was found shot to death in his home shortly before midnight. Police believe it a murder and are pursuing a neighbor’s tip about a man asking Rohm’s address around 9 45 PM. Rohm once faced bankruptcy and publicized debts before a past banquet for creditors.
Four members of the Decatur schools faculty recovering from bruises after their car skidded and turned over on the Bee Line highway south of Lacon Saturday night. Driver Coach Aubrey Fuller swerved to avoid several girls walking along the road and braked hard, causing the vehicle to overturn. Also in the car were Myers Tucker and Prof. Wheat. none seriously hurt.
Considerable interest surrounds the Manless Wedding played by the mission societies at Central Methodist church on Wednesday evening. The program begins at eight o'clock with no admission charged and a cordial invitation extended to the public.
The American Legion Auxiliary will meet Friday at 7 30 PM at Mrs Roy Billings 337 Sherman Street. The president and state governor and other state officials will be present and all members are urged to attend.
Military officials announced warnings found by National Guardsmen urging Sherman’s Black residents to evacuate within 24 hours or have their homes destroyed. A second note at a contractor’s shop warned workers, as guards in the Black section were reinforced. The colonel said troops would shoot at anyone inciting arson and a military inquiry was opened for last night’s conduct.
In Lebanon Tennessee a car carrying George Swann 35 of Elizabethton Tennessee and Mary Butler 10 of Atlanta was struck by a Tennessee Central freight train at a crossing near Martha. Swann a saxophonist with the Tolbert shows and Butler a performer died. Mrs Swann was seriously injured. The Tolbert company had given an exhibition nearby and was en route to Old Hickory near Nashville when the accident occurred. The troupe has performed in the area recently under American Legion auspices.
Dr. A J Perolio told a prominent Elkmont citizen to keep his dog confined or tied up not kill him after the bird dog acted suspiciously. He warned that killing a dog complicates rabies diagnosis and advised surveillance by the Laboratory director.
Mrs H C McRee who had been ill at her home for several days is reported to be on the road to recovery. Her daughter ne McRee is also reported improved.
Alphonso Lobue Northside grocer was slashed in a morning robbery at his Birmingham store. He said two armed men bound gagged him and took 61 dollars from his pocket as they rifled the register. He fired at the pair but the shots missed and the robbers then attacked with knives.
Dr. H. C. McRee reported giving toxid to seventy two children and typhoid shots to about a dozen more in one county area. County health nurse Mrs. Katherine Sewell did not report numbers for two additional groups but the day’s total likely around 150. The three week immunization campaign aims to reach several hundred school children.
A new group calling itself The Law Breakers Protective Association of Chicago claims a $2,000,000 budget and demanded $20,000 dues from two St. Louis men. Letters received by Tom Kearney and D. D. Murphy warn of elimination if demands are not met as the outfit extends to other cities.
Morgan county received long awaited rain this morning a slow ground soaking shower said to be worth thousands to farmers. The general rainfall covered most sections and followed by continued clouds the weather remains favorable for the growing season.
Police say three African American suspects Virgil Pruitt Pleas Boregaard and Will Tipper confessed to robbing a Wholesale grocery store and implicated in additional thefts. They deny other robberies while officers seek a fence and prepare to present signed confessions to the upcoming June grand jury.
Miss Emma South aged 35 died Monday at 3 35 p m at her home on Trinity Route 1. She is survived by brothers E L W M and F E South of Trinity Route 1. Funeral services were held this afternoon at Dancys Chapel with Rev Rivers officiating. Interment followed at the same place.
A robbery at Daniels Pharmacy Sunday night left the thief at large. The store was broken into through the front door and a small amount of cigarettes and a Rescue machine were taken. Police arrested three men last night, possibly connected to the crime.
In Florence Alabama on May 13 AP reports Mrs W B Hale 49 and her daughter Mary 11 were severely burned when gasoline used to clean a bed exploded after a girl struck a match to check the job. Both were taken to a local hospital with little hope of recovery.
Jean Mermoz, famed French aviator, returns to Rio de Janeiro after a 20 hour 12 minute trans Atlantic flight setting a mail transport record. His feat shrinks Europe to four days for mail service and signals a triumphal city welcome.
A woman residing in Somerville is held on arson charges and brought to the county jail yesterday afternoon by Deputy Sheriff C P Phillips and Deputy Kilgore. Authorities plan to present the case to the grand jury at the next session for investigation.
