Birmingham desegregation talks yield phased reforms
A biracial Birmingham committee proposed staged desegregation of lunch counters restrooms fitting rooms and drinking fountains within 90 days and expanding Negro hiring within 60 days. It also called for release on bond of those arrested during demonstrations and reestablished white Negro communications through the Senior Citizens Committee. Though not official, leaders urged peace as King hailed the developments as a climax toward broader change while tensions lingered.
