The Moulton Heights Parent-Teacher Association will hold the final meeting of the school year Tuesday at 7 30 p.m. at the school. The program titled Family Fun In The Summer features student arts and handicrafts on display. First grade mothers host the meeting and a date change is noted.
The United States proposes pilot arms reductions and inspection in a limited test area and is consulting Britain France and Canada on a reply to Soviet proposals. A Europe based test zone could be discussed but not a demilitarized central Europe. Harold Stassen reports hopeful progress from London talks.
MOULTON An organized drive for a one cent gross receipts tax for Lawrence schools is under way as committee members poll county groups to gauge public sentiment. Results will be given to the county board of education and then to Lawrence legislators. Rep W J Bill Lee and Sen Joe Calvin had said they would push a school tax bill if the people favor it. Polls aim to reflect general sentiment of the county and a special committee was formed Tuesday night with broad representation. See LAWRENCE on Page 2.
Athens farmers and plumbers faced a fire ant problem as a sewer line installation hit an ant hill. Extension Agent F. K. Agee described multiple distress calls from farmers. Poison was applied quickly and work resumed. ant stings can be dangerous and occasionally fatal.
TVA reports 1956 savings of about 20 million dollars from river shipping on the Tennessee River Waterway based on 11.8 million tons moved. Yearly operating and maintenance costs for TVA and partners amounted to 3.78 million, with net transport benefit equaling 11.7 percent of a 138.26 million navigation investment.

Farmers in Morgan, Lawrence, and Limestone counties face a major replanting task after a north wind dried soil and killed sprouting seeds. Up to 40 percent of cotton fields need replanting while corn planting progresses with more than half the land in cultivation. Livestock grazing remains strong and rain is eagerly awaited to push seeds from the ground.
Local 354 of the National Federation of Post Office Clerks in Decatur passed a resolution opposing the Thursday afternoon closures of Decatur and Albany station post offices. They state they do not approve of the Decatur Postmaster I E Self action and note members receive no benefit. Roy F Woods was elected president with Maurice L Meadows as vice president and Herbert S Ferguson as secretary treasurer. Copies went to Sen. Colombia returns to normalcy as deposed President Gustavo Rojas Pinilla flies into exile. A communique says he left for Spain with his family, stopping in Kingston Jamaica en route to Bermuda. A new government moves to fix his mistakes.
Rep. Bob Gilchrist of Hartselle plans a bill to un earmark funds now assigned to the State Dept of Pensions and Security. He argues the earmark limits aid to the handicapped, children, the blind, and other needy citizens and would share revenues with them. He expects strong administration opposition but has considerable support.
Sen. Joe Calvin announces a follow up to his competitive bid bill to require state purchases of 500 dollars or more to use competitive bidding. He aims to move the measure through the Senate finance and taxation committee with seven sponsors and a potential floor vote. The bill faces county bid limits and opposition from Gov. Folsom. House sponsor is Rep. George Hawkins.
In Leighton, Alabama, chief H. J. Searcy was shot and killed by Rush Delany Jr. after a dispute over a dog killing. Delany, 44, faced first degree murder charges and surrendered at 5:35 a.m. Investigators say Delany fired from his restaurant doorway with a 44 40 rifle, leaving Searcy dead near his patrol car.
Five men died at Pepperell Mills Inc. in Pepperell Alabama from hydrogen sulfide fumes and oxygen deprivation in a sump pit behind the bleaching plant. Bryant H. Jones of Opelika dropped a lost spectacles and died after descending to recover them, followed by four others in failed rescue attempts. The victims included Jones Donald Ing ram Jessie J. Thomas C. B. Cooper and Carter Ross, all Opelika residents.
Tennessee River reading at Keller Memorial Bridge Saturday morning stood 21.55 feet, rising 42 feet in 24 hours from sea level 555.85 feet. Friday high 44 degrees, low 56 at 6 am Saturday. 10 am Saturday 79 degrees. Forecast calls for clouds and warmth with sunshine, chance of afternoon showers and southerly winds 5 to 10 mph. High today about 83.
Secretary of Defense Charles E. Wilson defended the defense budget against cuts by any group including the Chamber of Commerce. He warned against a meat ax approach, calling the budget peril-point and urging restraint in tax and spending policy. He likened critics to a sharp purchasing agent.
Washington reports that Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip will visit the United States for about ten days in early October. This would be the Queen's first American trip since she ascended the throne in 1952, with earlier attendance in 1951 as guests of President Truman.
A raging blaze in a Stratford three story dwelling killed seven children of two families. The five Davis children perished in the second floor flat while Mrs Martha Davis was away shopping. Firefighters battled the fast spreading fire as the mother returned.
In Montgomery on May 11, the Alabama Legislature advances toward abolishing public education as a last resort under the Freedom of Choice amendment. Debated measures aim to shield school authorities from lawsuits, defend segregation suits, and protect teachers if funding and enrollment shift to private or alternative schools.
More than 2,000 Cullmanites and guests crowded the city to honor King Pharr Canning Co as it marked its 10th anniversary. The Chamber of Commerce declared King Pharr Day a success despite intermittent rain with plant tours highlighting the day.
Public Service Commission President C C Owen announced a public meeting for Wednesday night to discuss a boundary between the Southern Bell Moulton exchange area and the Hartselle exchange area. The meeting at 7 30 p m will include Southern Bell representatives as the company expands rural service formerly provided by Danville Telephone Co.
