Police estimated 60 000 antiwar demonstrators gathered beside the barricaded White House and remained peaceful as negotiators sought a conciliation from the Nixon administration. Later clashes emerged with roving groups, though no serious injuries were reported and 124 arrests were recorded.
Area residents back President Nixon's Cambodia decision while opposing student protests in Southeast Asia. In Washington, crowds swelled near the White House with arrests as police used tear gas to disperse disorderly groups. Demonstrations continued around Dupont Circle and George Washington University as tensions rose.
President Nixon, unable to sleep, sought understanding from Peace demonstrators at the Lincoln Memorial. He urged calm and peace as tens of thousands gathered on the Ellipse to protest the Vietnam war and Cambodia invasion news. Ronald Kemper and Joan Pelletier from Syracuse University remained unconvinced.
A U.S. and South Vietnamese flotilla of 100 navy vessels pushed up the Mekong into Cambodia while South Vietnamese troops landed on the east bank toward Phnom Penh. U.S. helicopters hit targets at Neak Luong as the assault continued, with a large 300 ton enemy cache found northwest of Saigon.

The Morgan County Register warns the absentee deadline has passed for most voters though college students military personnel and hospitalized or infirm individuals with doctor certificates may still apply for the Democratic primary runoff. New voter applications are allowed May 18 and 19 for those not yet qualified, while military ballots issued May 5 will be mailed to service members.
