Bennie Gamble 17, son of Boaz businessman John Gamble, attempted suicide by hanging from a tree in Gadsden Alabama. He was found unconscious after his mother and sisters failed to stop him. Doctors said recovery was unlikely. The youth had threatened self harm for days and brooded over a love affair.
Four detectives engaging four robber suspects near Toledo killed Claude Allen 32 of Mt Pleasant Tenn as they moved prisoners including a wife and four year old son. The encounter occurred at a house serving as the bandit gang headquarters after a three day hold up of Michigan stores and box cars. Allen died during the exchange as the suspects fled toward adjacent fields.
Three unmasked robbers held up the Maywood Trust and Savings in Hammond area just after opening. They covered employees with revolvers and sawed-off shotguns while two guards watched as the third grabbed all available cash, escaping with more than $20,000.
Morgan County League of Women Voters drafts a second letter inviting all governor candidates to a June banquet aimed at Tennessee Valley engagement. The plan includes delegates from Tri Cities and nearby counties, a night event for candidate platform outline, and a closing reception.
Buttreys department store on Second Avenue reopens Friday at 5:30 PM after months of preparation. The State laboratory forwarded anti rabies treatment for Margaret Andrews after a dog bite. Examination showed the dog head was rabid, confirming rabies in the animal.
Acquilla Turner of 25 Alma Street is the sole Gold Star Mother in the city to apply for a passport to visit her son Walter A Turner’s grave in France. The government will take Gold Star Mothers to see graves of sons who died in World War I, with 232 mothers already departing from New York.

In Columbus Ohio two sleeping inmates at the Ohio penitentiary were killed by machine gun rounds fired by guardsmen during yard security after last nights stockade fire. An estimated 400 prisoners had set tents aflame inside the stockade. Twenty prisoners refuse work and are confined in solitary.
A. Z. Bailey Grocery Company installs heavy iron bars on windows after three robberies in six weeks. Officials say locking the door after theft is poor policy but bars may deter further break ins as thieves have already entered the premises.
State laboratory reports show several dogs and possibly other animals have died from rabies in Northern Alabama, with higher prevalence in the Birmingham district. Officials urge vigilance against stray dogs and advise owners to keep pets secured and away from rabid animals.
Kiwanis members and their wives plan a trip to Cullman for the inter city meeting next Tuesday. Dr. A J Perolio, chair of the On to Cullman committee, reported about nineteen confirmations with more expected before the deadline.

In Bessemer Alabama Brunson Martin 21 was jailed today on charges tied to a cafe hold up. Donels Wale sustained a gunshot wound during the robbery as Walls and two accomplices fled. Officers pursued and captured an escaping robber after a brief chase.
Police have no clues on the identity of the robber or robbers who broke into the Bailey Grocery Company wholesale house and carried off a large amount of merchandise. A total gang is suspected to be behind a string of store robberies across Decatur and other county areas in recent weeks.
