Miss Alma Lampkin wins an automobile while Misses Mary Newman Anna Liza Minor and Myrtle Odom receive diamond rings. Alberta Holland Jemmie Galey and Francis Forbes win watches in the event.
The Decatur Daily Automobile Piano and Jewelry Contest ended with Alma Lampkin winning the $1,000 grand prize and Carolyn Cortner second for a $360 piano. District prizes went to Newman Holland Minor Galey Odom Forbes and others with a noted counting error later corrected in favor of Galey.
A semi official rumor says the Louisville and Nashville Railroad may place a new depot near the present oil mill in New Decatur. A large group believes a big double track bridge across the Tennessee River near the cable tower will be built, favoring a southern route and proximity to shops. Officials have not confirmed or denied the depot location.
Former Secretary of the Navy H A Herbert and lawyers including D F Micau George S Graham Cassilly Cook and Maurice Leon file federal suits in New York against the White Star Line seeking damages for loss of lives baggage and personal effects of Titanic passengers. Additional suits are expected in English Admiralty Courts after London inquiry ends.
The Mississippi Valley flood relief total stands at 226.61 with new gifts from St. Ann's Church and West Side Presbyterian Church adding 26. The Decatur Daily notes churches sent funds directly if not yet counted and urges immediate forwarding. It also covers contest winners and a paid circulation figure of about 1,600 daily subscribers.

Decatur City Council may act on Southern Bell Telephone Company operations without a franchise after notifying the firm at a recent meeting. Judge John C. Eyster and Judge Palmer plan to visit to seek an amicable resolution. The council will also discuss bridge contracts over Flint and Dry Creek and routine city business.
J W Webbern a United States Pension Examiner will inspect U S pension certificates at Decatur Post Office on May 9 and 16. Examiner Wellborn asks all pension certificate holders who can attend to bring their certificates to the Decatur Post Office on May 9 and 10.
Baltimore May 7 Colonel Roosevelt will control the Maryland state Republican convention by one vote securing sixteen delegates for Chicago. Early returns show Roosevelt with 63 delegates to Taft. Champ Clark swept the Democratic vote with 80 delegates to Wilson six and Harmon two. Roosevelt's majority for the annual vote was longer than pledged. By 2 p.m. Roosevelt leads Taft by about 3 500 with Clark's victory bolstered by late returns.
William J. Bryan launched a series of speeches in Ohio to denounce Governor Harmon as a Wall Street favorite and danger to the Democratic ticket. His tour ends Thursday with a call for voters to defeat Harmon in the May 21 primary. He praised Wilton as a progressive ally.
Captain R. C. Horton of Company Jabma National Guard leaves for Montgomery to attend the officers school of instruction in session all week. Lieutenant B. E. L. Wiles also departed yesterday to attend the school.
New Orleans May 7 2000 people including men women and children huddle on levees praying for rescue as boats rush in to save them. At least five drowned at Torres ing area while crews work to strengthen levees amid ongoing rescue efforts.
