Morgan County parents describe the slow onset of their teenage son's depression and withdrawal. A family doctor and private psychiatrist helped him, now at Bryce Hospital, making plans for the future. They urge earlier recognition and access to care.
Alabama Education Association trustees warned that without a larger state school budget Alabama pupils will lose. They argued funding must rise to match neighboring states to keep teachers and graduates in state. The board pressed filling school needs before private-school aid and noted Mrs. Wallace’s proposal to end Tuskeegee Institute funding but continue other private aid.
Former Gov George Wallace returns from New Hampshire saying he found the reception generally favorable at Dartmouth College and Concord while denouncing a heckler crowd. He plans two more speeches in Richmond Virginia and Princeton New Jersey and warns against academic freedom activists.
Alabama's Water Improvement Commission adopted a seven class criteria for interstate waters based on use, from public water supply to treated waste transport. The plan follows 14 public hearings and must meet a June 30 deadline under federal rules. Wildlife advocates failed to raise the oxygen standard, while a TVA nuclear plant cooling issue highlighted river effects on fish.
Jet Propulsion Laboratory reports Orbiter 4 fired a 53 second steering burn during midcourse maneuver to adjust its trajectory. The satellite, launched from Cape Kennedy to map 96 percent of the moon, remains on course with a new path about 1,680 miles south of the moon and a monitoring period ahead.
Montgomery AP reports former Gov. George Wallace says the cut off of state funds to Tuskegee Institute came on the recommendation of State School Supt. Ernest Stone. Wallace said Stone urged diverting the money to two other state colleges and that the administration followed the superintendent’s recommendation.
The first Athens College inauguration in 145 years centers on 55 year old Dr. Frank Philpot the college's 26th president. A 10 30 a m ceremony will feature Bishop Kenneth Goodson delivering the principal address with about 2500 guests expected. A symposium on the liberal arts role followed events and panelists included Dr Myron Wicke Father Hillard Dreaper and Rev Paul Clem.
Patrol forces launch a weekend radar enforcement blitz across Morgan Limestone Lawrence and Cullman counties under direction of Col. C W Russell and Capt John Williams. The Decatur district aims to slow traffic and warns drivers radar will be in force. A fatal drag race accident occurred in Cullman County involving 19 year old Jerry Wayne Bradford of Hanceville.
U S Marines of Company E 2nd Battalion 3rd Marines rest on Hill 881 North after a 12 day drive that cleared three peaks from North Vietnamese forces. The unit shrank from 220 to 131 men while repelling a major push toward Khe Sanh with air and artillery support.
