Johnson gains a two to one lead in early counts as he seeks to topple Gov Allan Shivers and control Texas Democratic delegates for the national convention. Precinct reports from Texarkana and Gregg County show Johnson ahead, with competing conventions forming over contesting delegates. See JOHNSON on Page 2.
Decatur area readings show the Tennessee River at Keller Memorial Bridge at 21.83 feet, up 0.06 in 24 hours. Saturday afternoon cools to 80 with a high of 80, 84 listed for 5 PM, forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies and warm conditions with afternoon and evening thundershowers.
A waterspout that moved ashore in Pensacola Bay damaged several buildings and disrupted power. One man, William Ellis Enfinger, 56, was pulled from debris and taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in critical condition. a mail truck driver was also listed in critical condition. Firemen estimated damages at about 250000 dollars.
John Gil bert Graham 24 the Graham was found guilty of killing his mother Daisie King by planting a dynamite time bomb in her luggage before an airliner crash near Longmont Colorado killing 44. He showed no desire to appeal and awaits execution after a new trial motion and possible appeals to the Colorado Supreme Court.
In Gettysburg Pennsylvania President Eisenhower and his grandson David played 18 holes at Gettysburg Country Club. David took lessons and earned a small fee while Eisenhower settled a charge with pro Dick Sleighter, paying seven dollars fifty cents in change after a ten dollar bill.
The Atlantic Alliance appointed three foreign ministers Lester Pearson Halvard Lange and Gaetano Martino to study plans for expanding NATO's economic and political role. They will report later this year on steps for a butter and ideas drive while consulting home governments for permission to serve.
Morgan County prepares for a second primary May 29 with runoffs for chairman of the board of revenue between Sim Howell and Guy Roberts. Howell leads 3 173 to 2 237. Hardin of Falkville faces Nelson of Cole Springs in the board of revenue pee runoff after 644 to 538 votes. Beat 1 James E Red Sims and Fred D. King head to a runoff with King trailing by 89 votes. Some incumbents avoid runoffs for education and justice of the peace positions. In Limestone County all six county offices proceed to second phase with runoffs set in Jamary. Mason Freeman leads with 1 542 seeds and faces Arthur Stewart for the board. Floyd Johnson leads in superintendent of education runoff with 2 137 votes. John W. Campbell Sr. 49 and John Campbell Jr. 28 died when their boat capsized in the Tennessee River near U S 31. The elder was recovered 23 minutes later, the son shortly after. Funeral set for Salem Methodist Church with burial at Inquoining cemetery. Investigation ruled accidental drowning.
Roy call the former Roth Co property a prime hosiery site with equipment and 275 workers ready to produce at competitive costs. Chamber of Commerce official says Roth Co intends to sell and a suitable hosiery manufacturer could be found for the plant. See BUYER on Page 2.
The Tuesday primary left E. Folsom with a sharper political defeat than in 1948 and marked a setback for his governorship during his second term. State Rep. C. W. McKay Jr. emerged as a rising figure after winning the Democratic national committeeman race, despite opposition highlighting his legislative campaigns and future gubernatorial prospects.
Virgil Champion died after being dragged by a horse on a Clayton Blankenship farm near Cave Springs. The 10 year old boy suffered concussion and other injuries before help arrived. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Brown Funeral Co.
