A Garce?ndon family of four from California perished in a foggy mountain crash while en route to Arkansas relatives. The sole survivor, a three year old girl, identified as Houston, escaped burns but was unable to free her belt before rescue.
May Day celebrations in Berlin faced threats of trouble as East and West German police kept order. Western sector crowds of 750,000 cheered anti Russia speakers at Potsdamer Platz while East Berliners demonstrated with pro Soviet banners. Police on both sides contained scattered clashes and arrests. Moscow marked May Day with a massive parade and Stalin’s return to reviewing stands.
Birmingham announces catcher Danny Ryan will join the Barons in Chattanooga to replace injured Bobby Nelson. Ryan recalled from Scranton of the Eastern League after a 24 hour stint, Nelson likely out several weeks with a shoulder separation.
The Supreme Court refused to stay the death sentence of Jim Arrington a 28 year old Black man convicted of raping a white woman in Alabama. He was sentenced to die in the electric chair at Laverne after a March 15 1949 trial. A tense crowd of about 500 watched as the high court upheld the verdict and two stays of execution had been granted by Gov. James E. Folsom pending appeal. Attorneys argued that court appointed counsel failed to provide an adequate defense.
Florida Democrats edge toward a photo finish in a primary to decide whether incumbent Claude Pepper or George Smathers will win the U S Senate seat. Alabama Democrats plan a broader civil rights clash while Ohio and Indiana primaries draw attention. Ballot box fireworks loom as McCarthy era rhetoric influences voters and national issues feed Florida campaign energy. See FIREWORKS on Page 2.
In Knoxville Tennessee George King aged 16 faces a murder charge in the slaying of 16 year old Carl Woodard. King admitted intent to frighten rather than shoot according to City Homicide Officer Carl Bunch. King is the nephew of Knoxville police officer Tom Hammer who aided the investigation.
Washington May 1 Spokesmen for major telephone companies object to an anti gambling bill arguing it would impose police functions on them. Senate commerce subcommittee weighs barring interstate transmission of gambling information. AT&T counsel calls it dangerous and unsound to assign law enforcement duties to phone firms. United States Independent Telephone Association warns of need for an army to stop gamblers using lines. Senator Tobey accuses AT T of not stopping big time gamblers. Rep Karsten suggests an investigation into McCarthy era loyalty claims and State Department employee lists.

Two men are held in Morgan County jail on suspicion of murder after Amos Jones, 30, was shot at daybreak near Decatur following a bene fit supper. Deputies say an argument over cars blocked the road sparked the shooting. Autopsy and ballistic tests are underway.
Crestview Florida May 1 An all male jury acquitted Mrs Melba Seymour former Valparaiso city clerk of embezzling 4428 97 in city funds. The circuit court jury was out an hour and 10 minutes in reaching its decision State Attorney J Edwin Hols berry said she embezzled the funds while serving as clerk and tax collector over a period of more than a year.
The Supreme Court refused to interfere with Georgia 1949 re registration law requiring voters to show reading ability of state and US constitutions and answer 10 of 30 government questions. The ruling upheld Governor Herman Talmadge’s bid to end bloc voting and noted 1.2 million voters, including 120,000 Black residents.
Alabama campaigns near finish as 400000 voters prepare to ballot in the Democratic primary. State party control battles shape the race for 72 executive committee seats with 92 pledged to the national party and 59 opposed. Runoffs likely May 30 for many winners.

Navy Captain Crommelin filed his declaration of candidacy for the U.S. Senate as an independent. A petition with around 500 signatures was submitted to the Secretary of State, meeting the 300 voter requirement before midnight, filed by Lawrence Byars of Montgomery.
Navy Captain John Crommelin announces he will run as an independent for the U S Senate seat held by Lister Hill. Lawrence McNeil, a Birmingham businessman and states fighter, opposes Hill in the primary. The Alabama race features a crowded governor’s field and a charged party committee battle highlighted by past civil rights controversy and regional leaders.
