Judge Horton denies motion to quash venue for Heywood Patterson trial set in Morgan circuit court. Jury selection begins as safeguards to avoid race bias in Scottsboro case defendants fight in jail. National Guard reports Patterson and Ozie Powell clashed with a spoon incident cited.
The Nazi regime announced a planned nationwide boycott of German goods with a 10 am Saturday start. Angriff control notes the move aimed to crush Jewish influence, warn World Jewry, and enforce economic coercion as Germany’s elevation of national honor continues.
For the third day in succession cotton stayed on the same quotation. Middling this afternoon remained at 6 cents on the Decatur markets, the same figure recorded Wednesday and Thursday.
Winnie Ruth Judd had her death sentence for the Agnes Anne Leroi murder stayed by a reprieve until April 21 after the Arizona Board of Pardon and Parole refused to recommend commutation. Governor Moeur’s power to commute rests on the board’s recommendation.

Tornadic winds killed 22 people across four states including Texas Louisiana and Arkansas with a twister striking towns in Mississippi Delta country. Fifteen deaths were in Texas five in Louisiana one in Arkansas and a Black man fatally injured at Davenport Mississippi. numerous injuries reported near Brookhaven Mississippi.
Three white youths assigned to city street work to pay drunkenness fines escaped from a transfer truck in west Decatur. Though in leg chains, they slipped from the jail conveyance and vanished. no trace of them had been found.
Nearly 6 000 people have applied for relief jobs under the Regional Finance Corporation plan in Morgan County. Officials report applications outpace initial projections, with certification progressing slower than registration. Road improvements, cleanups of rural properties, cemetery tidying, and town curbside work accompany relief efforts, aiding unemployed families despite modest pay.
Washington reports the Roosevelt administration plans sweeping veterans expenditure cuts under the economy act. Five groups including The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars met budget director Lewis Douglas to discuss changes that officials say will go the limit. Unofficial estimates place cuts at about four hundred million.
