Cloudy and warmer this afternoon and tonight with Wednesday showers and cooler in the northwest. The high 68 and low 46 for the 24 hour period. Decatur cotton market noon quotation middling inch 36.5 and strict low 35.5. Local notices include births, sermons, visits, marriages, obituaries, arrests, enlistments, hospital transfers, fire calls, and diary note reference.
A Decatur parking meter case has been appealed to the Alabama Supreme Court in Montgomery. Norman Harris represents defendants Paul Robinson and others while Phillip Shanks represents the City of Decatur. The case, argued in writing, questions the legality of parking meters installation pending since August of last year.
Morgan county remains $400 behind its $13,500 goal as local volunteers support the Red Cross campaign. County chairman Robert McNelly urges residents to contribute as they have in the past to aid disaster relief and community needs. Contributions may be sent to the county chapter office in the courthouse annex.
Police and AFL tied up in a six minute clash on Wall Street as 38 people including two women are detained for disorderly conduct. Rioting squads, mounted units, and private lines aided police while trading resumed by 10 am and exchange operations continued despite a nonfunctional telephone quotation service.
The First Presbyterian church let a contract to Wood Lumber Co. to build a small church on Courtland Road at an estimated cost of 5 000 dollars. Funds come mainly from church members with some gifts from other congregations. Building completion is expected by June 1.
The Decatur Daily publishes Morgan county's 1948 official voting list totaling over 12 000 names with a biannual update cycle. Probate J T C Almon urges voters to check their listed box and contact the probate office to correct errors before the supplementary list appears ten days later.
The House Appropriations Committee approved new funding for atomic weapons research and military road work in Alaska and for weapons against Russia. It backed a $332,407,782 bill to cover shortages through June 30, with $66 million under Truman’s request. The panel cut $200.3 million from Army finance, Post Office, and Air Force clothing budgets, and canceled $150.3 million in Army funds. Atomic energies got no cuts, with authority rising to $659,091,863. the commission was urged to accelerate wartime and peacetime research. The committee also approved $7.37 million cash and $4 million contract authority for a road project See ATOM On Page 2.
Greek army clashes with guerrilla forces in the Crucia mountains about 42 miles north of Salonika. Col Temple G Holland and Gen Theodore Grigoropoulios inspect operations as 15 000 conscripts may join a new defense corps under US aid.
In Washington on March 30 John L Lewis was ordered by Judge Edward M Curran to appear before President Truman’s board investigating the coal strike. Lewis, flanked by aides, did not personally attend the hearing while four of his lawyers argued the case for show cause. The court warned of possible fines or jail for contempt and noted the board’s pension dispute focus.
F. H. King of Holyoke Massachusetts testifies before a Senate Public Works subcommittee opposing congressional control of TVA operating expenses. He argues removing board oversight would hurt efficiency and cites Bonneville Power as a model, while opposing any measure threatening TVA’s public power leadership.
Judge Hugh Locke chairs the Democratic State Campaign Committee meeting at the courthouse Friday at 2 30 pm to discuss opposing President Truman and civil rights programs. Norman Harris says attendees from Morgan to Cullman counties will help organize county chapters.

Two Decatur men recover their stolen vehicles as a 16 year old Austinville boy faces Morgan County jail while a warrant is issued for another suspect. Eddie Lee Ball led highway patrol to Albeyville where Berryhill’s car was found. The youth confessed taking Berryhill’s car from Culver Cleaners parking lot and Ball had tampered with another Berryhill auto. The U S attorney in Birmingham may file a complaint under the national motor vehicle theft act.
The House approved 149 to 52 to invite Franco Spain into the $6.205 billion foreign aid program. Debate centered on whether Spain fits the European recovery framework and if Russia and satellites could join under similar terms. Another amendment aimed to limit the program to 16 already allied nations, excluding Spain unless terms include Spain specifically.
Union certified as the bargaining representative for Lincoln of Ala Inc Huntsville workers after a National Labor Relations Board supervised election. The unit included mill employees excluding clerical staff, foremen and supervisors.
