Washington March 25 Several contentious Senate amendments to the tariff bill may be debated separately in the House before conference. Leader Garner drives the move with bipartisan support as the three foot thick bill sits on the speaker’s table awaiting Monday action amid strong sectional debate.
Chester Gray and Ed ward A. O Neal, top officials of the Alabama and national Farm Bureaus, endorsed American Cyanamid’s bid for the Muscle Shoals project calling it a farmer s bill. They said private operation is preferred and that the Cyanamid offer followed Ford’s withdrawal.
The Morgan County census corps was named with Hugh S. Sherrill and Robert L. McCaleb in charge. Enumerators were assigned to Decatur, Falkville, Hartselle, Lacey Springs, Eva, Somerville, and other areas, beginning duties April 2 and the actual count starting August 2.
The spring PTA meeting will be at Austinville school next Friday from 3 to 6 PM with a picnic supper, then 7 PM sessions featuring Miss Norma Smith of the State Department of Education and a program led by S. O. Maner. Delegates from Riverside, Decatur, Price, Danville, Trinity, Eva are expected. talks include health education, devotional, community singing, and PTA aims.

MOULTON AL March 25 Mrs Mary B Pickrel supervisor of county schools resumes duties after a short absence due to her mother’s illness and death. With teachers’ cooperation spring tests in reading and spelling have begun and will be completed in time to compare with fall tests showing improvement across the schools.
News of the sudden death of John W. Gilchrist, a respected Morgan County resident, spread through the area. He collapsed while walking to a field near his home in Somerville. he died before aid arrived. Funeral services were held in Somerville.
Mrs Charles Evans Hughes moves into a 14 room four story residence on Sheridan Circle in Washington with Dutch art on a large room wall. The home near Charles Francis Adams attracts exclusive society as the Hughes family resumes official social duties and entertaining.
C. H. Happy Cowan of Mobile president of the Alabama Retail Lumber Dealers Association and Allen G. Loehr of Birmingham will be guests of Morgan County at a Lyons hotel banquet Wednesday evening. They are expected to deliver addresses on trade questions and the visit is awaited by local lumber dealers.
The state laboratory sent an anti rabies treatment to Dr. I W Howard Madison county physician at the request of Dr W a county health officer. The cat submitted for examination to determine rabies.
The Decatur Junior Chamber of Commerce board will gather at 7 30 tonight in The Daily office for an important session. President Jervis urges full attendance to discuss activities and business, aiming to keep the meeting within one hour and hear all board members.
Authorities report progress in identifying the driver of the hit and run car that killed Lonnie Christian on the Moulton Pike Friday night. No arrest yet as evidence to date does not justify detaining anyone, with Sheriff B E Davis and Chief Deputy W T Willoughby continuing the inquiry.
A play titled What Happened will be staged at Pleasant Hill church Saturday evening at 7 30 o clock. The public was extended a cordial invitation to attend.

Most household effects owned by local Black residents were lost as stores cafe and barber shop hurriedly emptied contents. Bynum Tweedy and Hollenbeck properties were at risk as heavy rain aided crews in defense efforts.
The office of the Superintendent of Education is preparing the annual reports for rural schools in Morgan County that have recently closed. The process requires painstaking accuracy as it affects the county’s state apportionment of funds.
