A 2,500 strong Viet Cong regiment launched dawn assaults near Cambodia but U S forces killed about 423 enemy troops and forced the unit into retreat. U S losses were 36 dead and 109 wounded with three missing as battle raged in War Zone C during the largest ground sweep drive.
A violent explosion ripped the engine room of the supertanker Torrey Canyon off Land's End. One man, believed salvage master of the Dutch tug Utrecht, was fatally burned. The ship, carrying about 80,000 tons of oil, faced resupply salvor vessels and British helicopters. The captain, three crew members, and two salvage officers were evacuated.
New York stocks higher as active trading continues. Chicago wheat mixed while corn and oats rise. soybeans fall on cautious planting notes. Hog futures slip 25 cents to 19.50 top, slaughter steers steady with top 26.50.
More than 2,800 teenagers in Decatur participated in a Chamber of Commerce survey. They asked for improved facilities, highlighting swimming as the top activity, followed by dancing and bowling, with many noting existing facilities are inadequate.
The U S Justice Department says a lawsuit has been filed to compel the Dale County School System to follow federal desegregation guidelines. The House has sent to President Johnson a 12 2 billion appropriation measure.

President Thieu said South Vietnam invited Hanoi to a peace meeting after returning from Guam with President Johnson. Hanoi had not replied. Ky said details could not be disclosed until Hanoi responds. White House declined to comment on the notice.
The Alabama House defeated a bill to submit daylight saving time to a statewide referendum by a 55 to 40 vote and then permanently tabled the motion to reconsider. The measure would have sent the question to voters at the next general election, delaying any effect for at least 90 days.
Hanoi says President Johnson sent a February message urging direct talks for peace in Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh rejected the offer after North Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry said the U S envoy in Moscow delivered Johnson’s message. See Hanoi on page 2.
Former congressman Albert Rains of Gadsden told the Alabama Association of Housing Authorities that decent housing is the basic remedy for poverty. He noted Alabama home titles rose from 33 percent to 72 percent during his time in office and urged aims of the War on Poverty while opposing government owned housing.
Gen Antonio Imbert Barrera, a key figure in Dominican turmoil two years ago, was shot and apparently wounded on a street on the outskirts of Santo Domingo.
The city commission authorized a 50000 sewer expansion extending the 21 inch main from the dry creek collector to 10th Ave NW to alleviate overflowing manholes on 10th Ave and prepare for heavier loads. The meeting covered 20 items and postponed a rezoning request for Danville Rd and Kooken Ave. A public hearing set for April 18 addresses Sth Ave SE zoning.
