Firemen respond to smoke at WAJF radio station
Firefighters checked WAJF at 112 Grant St after a hallway smoke report at 8:54 p.m. The employee said the odor came from a light fixture and no damage or loss occurred. Police found a 1947 Nash with Etowah County tag 31-19293 in a ditch behind the curb market.

Million Dollar Welfare Grant Proposed In Alabama Legislature
A conditional one time million dollar appropriation to head off scheduled welfare cuts was proposed in the Alabama Legislature. It would slow Gov. James E. Folsom's tax increase demands until the regular session in May. The measure cleared the Finance Committee but cannot be reported to the Senate until the next legislative day and cannot be voted on until the day after. Opponents pressed to delay tax action until financial needs are studied, but the effort paused as the bill went to the Rules Committee. Senator George Little asked to form a committee of the whole next Tuesday to examine the fiscal structure before new taxes. Senator Albert Boutwell inserted the deficiency appropriation to fund welfare at current levels and expand where possible, to avert a 10 percent April welfare cut. It would expire Sept. 30 and not fund a long term expansion plan.
