The two front strikes in Decatur remained quiet with L&N Railroad non operating employees and Southern Bell CIO members off work. Only the L&N Hummingbird passenger service ran, one freight passed, and locals terminated here as few freights normally pass daily. Pickets stood around L&N and telephone facilities as the public limited calls to urgent matters. See DECATUR on Page 2.

London Labor MPs voted 141 to 112 to withdraw the whip from Aneurin Bevan isolating him as an independent in the House of Commons. Bevan opposed the official line on hydrogen weapons and urged a British declaration not to use the H bomb unless first attacked.
Vandalism tied to the Southern Bell strike drew a CIO official's call for nonviolent action. Cable cuts and damaged lines spanned Georgia Florida Alabama Mississippi and Tennessee with incidents near LaGrange and Chattanooga. A toll line near LaGrange was torn down after a rope attached to a truck ripped 13 wires. Damage was repaired by morning.

In a fresh line-damage wave, vandals cut telephone lines in five spots including Birmingham downtown, Tuscaloosa and Muscle Shoals. Southern Bell offers 5000 dollar reward for arrests. repair crews race to restore hundreds of services and multiple cables were cut with bolt cutters.
Northerly winds bring cold air to the plains and upper Midwest while the South stays mild. Readings show zero in Glasgow Montana and 40 in St Louis with sharp drops across the Great Plains and lower temperatures spreading toward the mid Atlantic and New England coasts.
The House voted to send a Senate passed income tax bill to a Senate House conference to resolve a dispute over a proposed 20 dollar tax cut per taxpayer and dependent. The Senate rejected the House version and extended current corporate and excise taxes.
Hollis Powell is held in Morgan County jail on an assault with intent to murder charge after turning himself in. Palmer Smith remained hospitalized at Lavender Clinic in Hartselle with a bullet wound near the heart two inches to the left. No statement has been given by Powell or his defense regarding the Sunday night shooting in front of Powell's Chapel atop Lacon Mountain.
Birmingham attorney Reid faced vote fraud charges related to the June 1 Democratic primary. He declined to plead and his case is set for a non jury hearing on April 4 before Judge Robert J. Wheeler. Reid is one of three indicted for altering votes for attorney general. Arch Ferrell was acquitted last week. Former Atty. Gen. Si Garrett awaits trial.
Opposing lawyers have not fixed a trial date for Arch Ferrell over the June 18 slaying of A L Patterson in Phenix City Alabama. Patterson had been named attorney general hopeful weeks earlier. Albert Fuller was then Phenix City chief deputy sheriff and convicted of the murder. Former Attorney General Si Garrett faces murder charges and is patient in a Texas mental hospital with unclear prospects of trial.
The Finnish seamen union says crew of the tanker Aruba will strike rather than sail jet fuel to Communist China. Refusing to sail beyond Singapore, the crew warns the ship risks war actions amid U.N. embargo and Nationalist threats. Re-Be Shipping considers diverting Aruba to Indonesia to reload cargo.
President Eisenhower said atomic weapons could be used in any conflict if directed at strictly military targets. He backed Secretary Dulles who favored tactical atomic weapons in major actions. The remarks imply future wars may be atomic to some extent and highlight the president's authority over such decisions.
Funeral services for Ross V. Ford a 54 Gurley well known school executive are scheduled Thursday at 4 p m at the Shiloh Baptist Church between Hamilton and Hackerburg. He died Tuesday at 11 30 p m at the Veterans Hospital Birmingham after six months illness from leukemia. The body lies in state in Birmingham today at Norwood Brown Funeral Home Chapel then at Shiloh Church from 3 p m until the service. The Rev E N Anthony High Shoals Ga will conduct the service. Survivors include his widow three daughters Jane Ford Auburn Eleanor Ann Ford Florence Betty Ford Huntsville and other relatives. Ford was a former Auburn fullback and a long time educator serving 30 years as principal coach and superintendent.
Circuit Judge Stuart E. Lampe dissolved his order requiring train crews to ignore picket lines from 25 000 nonoperating employees in a strike against the Louisville and Nashville railroad and two subsidiaries. The three day stoppage affects 14 states, with six operating crafts opposing the temporary ruling citing safety concerns.
An Air Force B47 bomber crashed in flames near North Carolina early today. The three crewmen parachuted to safety, were rescued hours apart in a wooded swamp area between St. George and Bowesville, South Carolina. They suffered minor injuries and were flown to Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, Georgia. The crew is Capt. James M. Watson Jr., Capt. John F. Sabels, and Lt. Floyd D. Doss.
Kuo Tse-ching, a Nationalist lawmaker, alleged that K. P. Hu, general manager of Yangtze Wood Products Co., led a scheme defrauding the government of 1.3 million dollars. He named five agencies and called for suspensions in what he called the era’s largest corruption case since 1949.
Gov. James E. Folsom shelved his 20 million dollar old age pension tax plan and seeks passage of substitute measures costing about 12 million a year. Rep George Hawkins said the substitute would fund an adequate old age assistance program as two bills aim to tax insurance premiums and apply a 10 percent surtax on most existing taxes. If the substitutes fail, the governor will revert to his original five point tax program.
Morgan County Circuit Court juries convicted Fletcher Turner of grand larceny and Eugene Jones of leaving the scene of an accident. Judge S A Lynne fined Turner 500 dollars and sentenced him to 12 months hard labor for shooting J C Williams and taking money. Jones received a two year sentence for the January 9 1955 collision at the Decatur Moulton Road and Trinity Lane intersection involving a 1935 Ford and a 1949 Ford.
Robert Bates a 39 year old man walked away from a group of city prisoners yesterday escaping. Bates had been jailed last Thursday for petit larceny after being found guilty of taking a bathtub and laboratory from an empty house at 440 11th Ave. W. He faced a $100 fine plus $3 costs and 30 days at hard labor for the city.
