Trading resumed with cotton futures surging to 4.50 a bale and May cotton at seven cents, while Chicago grain jumped its daily limit and New York stocks rallied. Bond prices rose as the market recovered from February losses, with broad gains across equities and government issues.
New York on bank holiday reports show Wheaters along Broadway took in $20 000 in checks. Of these 75 percent cleared banks while only one bounced. Lyric theater manager Tom Burk was surprised as customers honored I O Us for tickets and paid up 75 outstanding ones.
Caraway faces trial for the January 29 1932 Falkville bank robbery as defense counsel seeks alibi. State witness Otis Burnett accuses Caraway and two others of aiding the robbery and fleeing in a Ford roadster.
In Montgomery Alabama on March 16 the senate refused to concur in house amendments to the Mullins prohibition convention bill and sent it to a conference committee to fix technical defects. Senator Mullins urged non concurrence due to title concerns risking constitutionality. The senate delayed Walker bills on municipal light and water plant operation and feeder lines to Muscle Shoals. Representative Robinson introduced a 3.2 beer legalization bill.
In Nashville Ohio kidnap victim Charles W. Sachs Jr. 16 escapes two captors during a tornado. He fled from a Dayton, Ohio home to a Nashville hotel as the storm hit, slipping free when the car stopped and seeking help from hotel manager Howard Bachman.
Long Beach relief agencies feed 80 000 quake victims daily as emergency mass feeding runs in Compton and Artesia. Officials plan compulsory earthquake proof construction in the Southern California zone. The death toll reached 116 with J E Brasted reported dead from shock, Long Beach's 56th victim.
H M Priest of Decatur reports narrow escapes from two separate disasters. His daughter Mrs N E Schaeffer was in the Los Angeles earthquake zone, while his brother Eugene Priest lived in the Nashville tornado area. Despite his house suffering tornado damage, the family all escaped unharmed. Priest returned from Nashville after hearing of the storm.
President Roosevelt focused on a message to Congress addressing unemployment and farm relief to be sent today. White House aides note the themes will be combined in one address. Representative Burns plans quick farm relief passage in the House with no open hearings.
After three days of debate the Senate backed a bill granting the president authority to reduce veterans benefits and federal pay by as much as half a billion dollars. The 62 to 13 vote sent it back to the House for action on amendments, with leaders confident of quick agreement or conference if needed.
The President accepted Senate amendments signaling swift action on the economy bill. Beer legalization was pursued with leaders aiming for passage by nightfall. Horse and economy measure returned for adoption of Senate changes, all minor.
Banks in Morgan County and the Tennessee Valley area approach normal operations as the government holiday extends through Saturday and ends Monday morning. Morgan County National Bank reports a normal day with strong deposits and new accounts. Tennessee Valley Bank plans to reopen with a date announcement expected later today or Friday.
Mrs J E McGuire of 109 Riverside Avenue died last night at Benevolent Hospital from flu and pneumonia. Survived by husband two sons four brothers and four sisters. Body moved to Priest's for burial with funeral services at 2 30 this afternoon.
Robert Garrison has returned from a business trip to Fairfield. He arrived home last evening and will resume his local duties today.

Tom Cornwell, proprietor of Cornwell's barbecue stand on W Vine Street, was found dead at his home on W Church Street about 7 o'clock Wednesday night. He had been in ill health, and his wife had been managing the business while he was ill. He was discovered lying dead on the kitchen floor when she returned home at 7 o'clock.
Two couples named Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Caldwell and Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Bauer, all said to be from Cincinnati, were investigated by the Decatur police. Two men were arrested on pistol charges after a failed robbery at Mrs. Kate Lackner's Bank Street home. The women were detained for questioning, armed with pistols but not resisting arrest.
The Ninth Street Methodist church will host a monthly fellowship dinner Friday evening next week. The event is organized by the young people’s department with Mrs. E. E. Beard serving as counselor.
The W. C. T. U. will hold a regular session Friday at 2 30 PM at Mrs. H. M. Priest's home on Jackson street. The Moulton group will visit the Decatur union and all members are urged to attend.
