Cloudy with scattered rain this afternoon and warmer tonight into Tuesday. Local residents visiting and a string of hospital admissions and discharges, births, and police activity populate the Decatur area. council and VFW events noted along with a diary page tease.
Six Cullman county coal miners pleaded guilty to assault and battery in an ambush on a coal truck during a fall strike. Each man received 90 days hard labor and a $500 fine. one Creel trial verdict preceded the pleas. Names include James Moore J P Davis James H Stewart Walter Hight and Leslie Williams with Finis St John and Charles D Tweedy acting as defense counsel.
Antonio Brasil, a tenant farmer from San Jorge Azores, found a plastic ball containing a note promising $1000 cash and $1000 in merchandise after a Hollywood trip. A radio stunt sent him to Hollywood for a week of luxury before returning home to buy 10 acres with his men, after earning about $100 a year.
Rutledge Thomas city streets commissioner says pipes under Sixteenth Avenue connect with an open ditch between Sixteenth and Eighteenth Avenues. The work, part of the Seventh Street to Locust Street paving plan, will address storm drainage and involved grading Locust Street. Surplus dirt fills Sheridan apartments site at Twelfth Avenue and Seventh Street and the front of Decatur General Hospital. Curb and gutter paving set to begin by April 1.

Gubernatorial candidate Elbert Boozer urged a state backed loan plan for World War II veterans offering up to $5,000 at 4 percent interest payable in 10 years. A moderate coalition appears likely for the new 250 member parliament. In London the King’s speech focused on atomic energy controls and UN support.
Eastport Maine, a city of 3500, lacks fresh water as a 10 inch main froze. Fire Chief Bradish kept crews on standby while repairmen sought 700000 gallons of auxiliary supply. Residents carried water in jugs and kettles. springs and wells offered emergency relief and volunteers supplied Eastport Memorial Hospital.
In Manchester New Hampshire Dr Hermann N Sander testifies he injected air into Mrs Abbie Borreto and thought she was dead He says he did not intend to kill her and believed she died of cancer when he signed the death certificate He explains he wrote the chart to record his actions even if they had no effect and notes he could have recorded air embolism if he believed it caused death.
Kiwanis club provides 2000 dollars toward a city sponsored camping project for Decatur students. The plan calls for a year around school camp on a 100 acre site by Spring Creek, with teachers running programs from fourth through twelfth grade and potential assistance from Florence State Teachers College.
A 19 year old released from a hospital slashed through a Brooklyn tenement district killing four white men and injuring three others in a ten minute rampage. He was subdued with gun butts after police pursued him over three blocks. The assailant William Jones, a black youth, grabbed a 14 inch carving knife from a restaurant and attacked pedestrians without warning. One victim, a 20 year old black man, was a friend, as Jones targeted strangers. This violent spree echoed earlier Camden New Jersey gun rampage by Howard Unruh.
A dynamite blast ripped the Dearborn bar last night injuring Circle Bar co owner Stephen Mikeley who was hit by a splinter. About 1,000 theater patrons panicked as a mob rushed to the street. Police investigate the device placed behind the door, with bar workers previously picketed by a union.
Hartselle introduces Teen Town a youth center for 12 to 19 year olds with a reception at Teen Town Hall in Hartselle Christian Church. Officials include Mayor Johnny Cain and Alderman Henry Kracke, PTA sponsors. hours run daily 3 to 6 pm with junior and senior evenings and plans for a dedicated building.
The negotiat ed contract ends a four week coal strike and promises 370 000 miners work for at least a year. UMW President John L Lewis hailed the agreement while operators hope for stability and gap closing in anthracite talks. The pact runs to June 30 1952 with a possible early cancellation and wage and welfare terms.
