Navy selects F-18 carrier fighter over F-16 derivative
LTV protests the Navy choice of a McDonnell Douglas designed carrier version of the F-17 renamed F-18, arguing it violates a mandate to be a derivative of the Air Force fighter. The decision pits LTV, Grumman, McDonnell Douglas, Northrop and engine makers GE and Pratt & Whitney in a high-stakes, multi-billion battle with the GAO review pending.
