TVA increases Decatur substation capacity from 4 500 kva to 48 000 kva in a major upgrade. The Decatur area will see $638 645 total spent for the project and city expansion to meet rapid industrial growth. Construction crews work around the clock and aim to finish by July tenth.
Five members of the house of representatives visited the TVA region to observe changes since the Authority's 1933 creation. The group included William A. Dawson Layton Utah Wesley A D Ewart Wilsall Montana Norris Poulson Los Angeles Monroe M Redden Hendersonville N C and John Sanborn Hager man Idaho.
A Saturday ceremony marked the opening of the Decatur Farm Market on the old Grant Street site. Mayor H R Summer, Rev W W Glas and local civic leaders addressed attendees, highlighting progress from the 1932 days and the goal of city and country collaboration. The event featured speeches by chamber officials, civic group representatives, and area farm and business leaders.
Tennessee Valley Authority crews and Eddenfield Electric company will relocate the A circuit a 154 KV line and energize a new 44 KV circuit at the Wolverine site East Decatur between midnight Saturday and Sunday. The existing 154 KV line will be de energized with no expected interruption to Decatur power service.
Her bert Ray Sherrow Jr. known as Herby of Decatur will travel with his parents to Dallas for a six week Apollo Boys choir voice training camp. He aims for fall membership and may perform alto or second soprano with possible trombone cameo. The family plans to visit California after drop off and return by August 1.
Detective Captain Will Fritz said a stray pistol bullet killed five year old Mary Lane Mc Carter while she slept in her home early this morning. Her mother found the body at 7. Beauford, two, lay beside her. A 38 caliber bullet was lodged near the heart. investigators search for the shooter, deeming the incident likely accidental.
Mrs N F Murphy 58 of Hartselle 3 died suddenly Friday morning after a heart attack at the Morgan county Red Cross office in the Courthouse annex while seeking to speak with the director about her son in the Veterans hospital in Nashville. Funeral services are set for Sunday at Cedar Creek Church with Rev Thomas V Hatchett officiating. Burial at Peck directing. Survivors include husband, one daughter Mamie Murphy and seven sons, plus two brothers and one sister.
Flash floods and cloudbursts hit northeastern Tennessee near the Virginia border. In Sneedville a two year old girl, Janet Sue Short, drowned after entering a flood swollen creek while crossing a footlog. Neighbor recovered her body downstream. Five inches of rain fell in three hours flooding downtown stores and forcing families from homes. Agricultural losses in Greene County run well over a million dollars.
A University of Alabama Bureau of Business Research summary reports April 1947 bank debits in Decatur declined from March yet stayed well above April last year. Total deposits reached $12,318,841 with savings at $2,195,212, while postal savings remained strong at $359,918.
Postal receipts rose in April aided by quarterly box rentals though total $9,980 was over 50 percent lower than a year earlier. Retail sales across Morgan County increased overall with lumber and building materials and general stores leading gains while department stores and dining venues fell. Building permits reached $46,900 down about 3 percent year over year. Mortgage values totaled $318,787 with a slight decline. Alabama State Employment Service reports 318 applications and 302 job placements in April, with applications down from last year but up from March.
Veterans in North Alabama gain a path to skilled trades at Decatur Trade School. A minimal education qualifies men for watch making, radio and electricity courses taught five days a week from 8 AM to 2 PM. Training is aided by instructors from local jewelers and Athens, with space for 112 residents and a cafeteria serving at non profit rates.
Mayor H R Summer appeals to Decatur residents to follow health and sanitation laws. He notes new garbage cans and trucks redirected to collect twice weekly from homes and businesses to improve service.
General Eisenhower told a Senate subcommittee that the US Army ranks a poor second to Russia in overall strength. He warned that major domestic budget cuts risk weakening the force and hampering ability to press for peace and defend the nation. He urged restoring 375 million and adding 103 million for newer aircraft costs.
Norman Malone an 18 year old tenant on the L S Sandlin farm in Tanner pled guilty to burglary at a Limestone county court preliminary hearing and was bound over to await grand jury action without bond. He faced charges of entering the Sandlin home with intent to ravish and steal as Miss Bertha awoke.
The nation faces a 31 day coal supply as a 10 day miners vacation triggers widespread cuts. AFL UMW miners drain soft coal pits causing layoffs at Carnegie Illinois Steel and other mills while railroads feel the pinch and private operators move to end federal control.
AFL counsel Joseph Padway says all unions should avoid wage contracts with no strike clauses and plan to violate the Taft Hartley act ban on political expenditures. After a 100 attorney meeting he urged defeating Taft Hartley allies at elections and using publications to expose their records. He also suggested disregarding the NLRB and resisting affidavits labeling officers as non communists.
