Washington reports the Senate approved a treaty with Great Britain exchanging 600000 bales of American cotton for British rubber in less than a minute without a dissent. Earlier the Banking Committee approved legislation to implement the agreement terms.
Emmett G. Underwood a 42 year old L and N brakeman is in critical condition at University of Alabama Hospital Birmingham after being pinned under a shed roof when a box car crashed into the loading platform near Cullman. His left leg was amputated and he has a crushed right shoulder and internal injuries. He was trapped for over two hours as crews cut a hole and lifted debris. He was later moved to Birmingham aboard L and N train No 7. His home is in Columbia Tennessee.
The United States Treasury cut the price for silver to 33 1 2 cents per ounce after Sec. Morgenthau signaled alignment with London rates. The move marks the third cut in as many days and leaves the price five cents below March 1938 levels. The London price also fell to 37.79 cents, down from 38.32.

City friends learn of the death in Atlanta at two this morning of Mrs. W. B. Waterhouse mother of Rev. W. E. Waterhouse pastor of the First Baptist church of Decatur. She had been ill. Funeral services will be held Saturday at ten in Atlanta. She is survived by two sons R. F. Waterhouse and Rev. W. E. Waterhouse a daughter Mrs. Sessions and several grandchildren.
Mayor Thomas L. Cummings of Nashville arrives in New York to negotiate with Wendell L. Willkie for independent city acquisition of Commonwealth & Southern electric properties. He aims to avoid duplicating facilities if Congress cannot pass enabling legislation or the Tennessee Valley Authority deal. L. J. Wilhoite of Chattanooga Electric Power Board supports avoiding duplicate plants.
A car belonging to the Alabama Crimson Tide athletic department was stolen in Birmingham, with key personnel items inside. The vehicle held films from Alabama games and a $375 projector. Dr. Richard Foster and coaches including Frank Thomas, Bear Bryant, Hank Crisp were en route to Huntsville for alumni meetings.

Funeral services were held at 5 pm at the Morgan home for the infant son who died at 5 30 am Wednesday at 210 Wilson Avenue. Dr B F Tingle conducted the rites. Burial at Roselawn was arranged by Drinkard Howell. The parents survive.
Monterey Calif June 29 noted author Harry Leon Wilson died here last night in his sleep after several years of illness. Wilson 72 published novels and essays and was a prominent figure in American letters. His passing ends a long career marked by literary works and public involvement.
Henry L. Gaylord, 83, a attorney in Fertile Minnesota, has a new baby boy born to his 40-year-old wife. It is the couple’s seventh child together and Gaylord’s 18th, following two previous marriages.
Coach Frank Thomas and Dr Richard C. Foster left Huntsville for an alumni banquet but their luggage and football films were stolen from a parked car in Birmingham. Henry Crisp remained to file police reports. Thomas borrowed a suit to attend, and Foster ate at a local store. Foster and Thomas addressed about 100 plus attendees, with predictions on Tennessee and Tulane, and cautious optimism for Alabama's season.
Mrs H F Drewis of Portland portably confronted a man tampering with her auto. He admitted the theft and handed back a camera and other items before moving to a second car. Police were called but the suspect vanished on her return.
A joint meeting of the city council finance committee and the Municipal Utilities Board discussed policies for operating the Alabama Water Service Co plant, which the city bought today for 825000. The legislature had empowered the board to set policies for utilities the city may acquire. City officials present included Mayor Harrison and committee members Patterson, Dillehay, Kennedy, along with board members Cottingham, Wyatt, Johnson.
The United States faces passage of a record federal farm outlay totaling 1.194 billion dollars for the year ahead. The agriculture appropriation bill, far larger than Roosevelt asked, awaits his signature after five months of legislative maneuvering.

Ray Olson, a fugitive killer of two deputy sheriffs, was shot and killed by a posse led by Constable Ernest Moore near Cable on Lake Namakagon. Olson, pursued since June 17, fled into the lake trying to escape in a boat after a two week manhunt across Sawyer and Bayfield counties. He died minutes after being pulled from the water and admitted the killings before death.
J Edgar Hoover charged corrupt politicians who prioritize underworld profits with creating a criminal army of nearly five million in the United States. A massive blaze destroyed Ardmore Grain Co. in a fierce two and a half hour battle. Fire departments from Pulaski Fayetteville and Athens aided by hundreds of volunteers kept the fire from spreading beyond the 75 by 100 foot building with a large elevator. Estimated loss stood near 17000 dollars as townspeople worked to defend nearby stocks and homes.
