White House clash over proposed domestic intelligence plan
In 1970 White House aides pressed to override J Edgar Hoover to push a domestic intelligence program that could include burglaries. Nixon disclosed initial approval on July 23 1970 but withdrew five days later after Hoover objected. Huston warned Hoover claimed power beyond the president and suggested using NSA DIA CIA and military support. The plan faced fear of illegal break ins and leaks and was never implemented according to Nixon though some say parts were used. The documents were released by the Senate Watergate Committee at John Dean's safe deposit box.
