Local notes report partly cloudy outlook across the state with possible northwest showers. Community updates include hospital visits, military addresses, births, births at Decatur General hospital, preacher services at Austinville Baptist Church, and hospital stays in Nashville and Birmingham.
The Morgan circuit court jury began deliberations this morning on Robert Baker 22 charged as the switch car driver in the Morris store robbery last February. The trial included two and a half days of testimony with Baker taking the stand twice. The defense sought an affir mative charge and the judge instructed the jury before recess.
Stellman Barker a 33 year old former Hale county farm agent was arrested by the FBI in Detroit on a federal warrant charging him with applying for a farm loan he did not deserve. The Alabama man faces federal charges and awaits further action.
Patterson, one of the Scottsboro defendants, was recaptured in Detroit on a fugitive warrant nearly two years after escaping Kilby prison. He remains jailed on a $10,000 bond with a removal hearing set for July 13, while the case traces the fate of eight fellow defendants and the long litigation surrounding the 1931 train incident.
Franklin Thomas Slay 23 was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his 16 year old Indiana sweetheart Mary Ellen Harmon near Hopkinsville Kentucky. The jury convicted after one hour forty five minutes and the judge will formalize the sentence this week. Slay admitted striking the girl with a hammer during a heated argument and was arrested near Keller Memorial bridge last November as he fled south. Harmon's father demanded justice as Slay faced trial.
A petition for rehearing of an appeal by Vero Anders 33 Hart selle community farmer was denied by the state court of appeals. Anders was sentenced to 10 years for the second degree murder of John Sparkman a Hartsel le bus driver in Morgan circuit court in February 1949. The case involved Sparkman being struck by a 12 gauge shotgun in front of the Anders home and subsequent threats and violence surrounding his death. Geneva Sparkman wife of the deceased testified for the state at trial noting there had been no prior trouble with her husband.
Washington reports the Senate approved a one year extension of the draft act by 76 to 0, giving President Truman power to call draftees, reserves, and guards to keep military strength above two million. The House backed the measure 315 to 4, enabling up to 600,000 draftees and reserves if needed as Korea fights intensify.
Governor James E. Folsom orders Alabama legislature back in special session July 5 to pursue reapportionment and a house plan based on population. He also seeks a constitutional convention and invites local county bills, calling action an emergency and saying no laws can pass without reapportionment.
The United Nations Security Council voted 7 to 1, with India and Egypt not participating, to authorize military sanctions backing a cease fire against North Korea. President Truman announced U S forces would support South Korea as the council’s action marked the first use of UN military sanctions. Yugoslavia voted against.

Officials say Russia holds the key to whether world war or peace follows the Korean crisis.
In Pen City Alabama a circuit court jury continues to weigh the murder charge against 24 year old textile worker Charlie Carlisle Jr after his signed statement was admitted as evidence. The case involves a night slaying and references a supposed unmasked band and a Ku Klux Klan man linked to the incident.
Pravda accuses the United States of direct aggression against Korea and Formosa in response to Truman’s order sending ships and planes. The editorial says the U N charter is being trampled and questions who authorized the act while highlighting Soviet press reaction and related dispatches.
Kingston Tennessee June 28 The 40 boats on the Tennessee Valley Ho cruise left for Knoxville to complete the 650 mile voyage up the Tennessee River The crew planned a banquet and a tour into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as hosts led the flotilla from Paducah Kentucky and through TVA river chain events.
South Korean defenses struggle to form a line farther south as American air power backs them. U S Far East Air Forces report jets and light bombers attack North Korean positions near Munsan and northwest of Seoul. The defense effort follows Seoul and Kimpo losses with Inchon probably untenable.
In Damascus on June 28, a catastrophic explosion killed sixty people. Officials report a large blast caused by a government incident, with authorities outlining casualty counts and ongoing investigations.
