Gas bombs in police hands stop Beaumont jail mob
A mob of about one hundred including several women attacked the Jefferson County jail in Beaumont Texas to seize Rainey Williams 39 who confessed eight attacks on Port Arthur women. Tear gas and water jets failed to halt the attackers and the rope of a rear car trailed as the mob retreated two hours after the assault. Williams had been moved to Port Arthur for safekeeping after a preceding lynching attempt was thwarted.

Cris Gaines, a Black man, was found guilty of first degree murder for killing his brother Sam Gaines during a March quarrel over plow harness on the Gaines farm.
