The Spirit to America parade on Independence Day starts at 9 a.m. at Point Mallard with a fire truck siren, drum corps, and Shriners cart. Children meet at 8:45 a.m. at the aquatic center West parking lot for free patriotic hats and flags.

Flint City Nursing Home, under operator Maurice McKinnie, received a summons for a state hearing on July 20 after a four page list of deficiencies. Athens College faces $899000 debt on a 1968 dormitory bond issue. Bondholders may act if dorm rental funds fail to cover $200000 in back interest, though officials say foreclosure is not imminent. Central Bank of Alabama acts as trustee for the issue.
Mrs. George Ann Guse, mother of nine-year-old Michelle Guse, spoke of prayers and sympathy pouring in from Decatur and worldwide after the northeast Oklahoma Girl Scout slayings. Officials note Camp Scott may reopen slowly, while turnout at Trico camps could drop slightly though overall Scouting remains strong.
Locust Grove Oklahoma authorities press on with a large manhunt for Gene Leroy Hart an escaped convict accused in the June 13 Girl Scout camp murders near Camp Scott. About 150 lawmen and citizens search a 10 square mile area as rain floods tracks and keeps residents indoors amid fear and high humidity.
The National Weather Service predicts afternoon showers with generally less than half an inch rainfall. Farmers face hay shortages and potential cattle sales while cotton appears to benefit from dry heat. soybeans vary and corn losses notable in Limestone County.
