Nixon Lifts Ban On Meat Imports
President Nixon ended all meat import quotas for 1972 to ease a short term shortage and curb rising prices. Officials cautioned the move may not quickly lower costs, as effects could take weeks or months to materialize. Shultz framed the action as price stabilization, not a price freeze, with beef, mutton and veal main targets. Australia supplies about half the 1.2 million pound annual quota, with Rogers in Australia to discuss possible actions.
