The Johnson Kosygin summit left both leaders with face to face contact and a sense of responsibility to avert nuclear war. They instructed Rusk and Gromyko to pursue a Washington Moscow draft treaty on nuclear weapons while acknowledging deep divides on Vietnam and Middle East issues.
U S and Soviet leaders Johnson and Kosygin failed to settle key disputes on Vietnam and the Middle East during the Glassboro summit. They pledged continued direct contact while Secretary Rusk and Foreign Minister Gromyko prepare to pursue concrete accords, with Kosygin leaving for Moscow after briefing Kremlin colleagues.
North Alabama celebrates Independence Day with a first for the American Red Cross as a Bloodmobile operates July 4 at Delano Park from 1 p.m. to 6 30 p.m. The event is part of the Spirit of America observance led by Linden Claybrook. Thousands are expected to attend.

Circuit Judge Reneau Almon will hear a request for a temporary restraining order on Thursday at 4 30 p m to prevent changing Lawrence County government. Defendants Lee and Alabama Attorney General Gallion must answer by Friday.

The Senate Finance Committee quickly approved a bill to raise the national debt limit to 358 billion dollars. Chairman William McChesney Martin Jr. of the Federal Reserve Board urged prompt congressional action to raise taxes to prevent another inflationary round.
