A cotton bloom from Rudolph Watts fields on the Lamar Penney farm arrived at the daily office this morning. Eight city cases appear on the recorder docket including intoxicated on a public street and disorderly conduct.
Gamal Abdel Nasser declared president after a landslide in the first secret ballot for Egypt’s republic. He won over 90 percent of votes with 94 percent turnout and 97.7 percent backing the new constitution. The Interior Ministry reported the results amid celebratory and tense political climate.

A British judge, Justice Bernard Shaw, was shot in the head and neck while seated in a guarded car in Nicosia. He had just presided over cases under emergency rule and was taken to a hospital in serious condition as attackers fled in a small car.
Decatur police reported a quiet weekend with only one traffic crash and one burglary. The W C Wright Service Station on Joeer Highway was broken into by window entry, stealing a change box and about ten cigarette cartons and two dollar bills. Investigators Frank Shafer Jr and Howard Verner also handled the incident. A two-vehicle collision on Bank Street near Lafayette Street at 5 13 p m involved a 1956 Ford driven by Billie Buttram and a Plymouth. no injuries and minor damage were noted. Investigators W C Hunter and Howard Verner looked into that crash.
The Public Service Commission and city officials pursue an appeal after a federal court panel on June 5 ruled state and city laws enforcing separate seating for whites and Negroes unconstitutional under the Federal Constitution.

Charles Sydney Miner, an American businessman, left Shanghai for the United States after a five year wait for an exit permit. Miner had resided in Shanghai for seven years, living through the Communist takeover and serving as representative for the Shanghai Post and Evening Mercury and for insurance magnate C. V. Starr. He arrived in Hong Kong on May 19 before flying home.
President Eisenhower will convalesce at his Gettysburg farm home after discharge from Walter Reed Army Hospital likely Friday or Saturday. He plans a July visit to Panama City for talks with other American presidents and may adjust dates for India talks. James C. Hagerty said no discharge details yet and the 40th wedding anniversary will be spent at the farm.
Alabama Power Co prepares to file with the Federal Power Commission around July 1 for constructing New Hope Dam near the Cullman Walker County line. The estimated cost is 30 million dollars and work may start before year end after two years of engineering studies.
Hamburg Der Spiegel reports domestic strife between Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard over his mother Armgard zu Lippe-Biesterfeld. Bernhard allegedly plans to leave if his mother is not invited to the garden party, with Beatrix and Irene possibly joining him.
Athens mayor Elmer L. Vinson qualified for a third term after serving two terms as mayor and two terms as Limestone Tax Collector. Cecil Warren, Athens businessman, also qualified for the July 16 election, while Ernia M. Stephens became the lone alderman candidate today. Five aldermen are to be elected from the city at large.
Worthington and union representatives met at the Cad dell offices seeking settlement after the Decatur works strike began last Tuesday. No changes in position were reported as Federal conciliator George Roseberry coordinated contact and the groups met separately before a brief joint session. Thermon Phillips and Maurice Allen, both Birmingham officials, participated for the union side.
In Reykjavik the Conservative Independence Party seeks to keep American troops on Iceland NATO bases but lost ground in the parliamentary election. A Progressives and Social alliance aiming to oust US forces at Keflavik and other sites nearly won a majority in the Althing, according to a preliminary count.
Senator Jackson warns that overseas air bases could be lost due to larger Air Force funding. The Senate panel boosts the Air Force budget by 1.16 billion for planes bases and manpower, raising total to 34.94 billion as debates continue over Eisenhower's request.
The Tennessee River at Keller Memorial Bridge stood at 20.37 feet this morning, down 0.56 feet in 24 hours. Yesterday’s high was 93 with a low of 72. At 8:30 this morning the temperature was 85 with isolated showers by 10:30. Tonight should be fair and warm with a high around 9 percent humidity.

He toured Soviet Aviation Day where the USSR unveiled three delta-wing interceptors and two improved all weather fighters. Khrushchev stated the display emphasized defense and not offense amid calls for disarmament and world friendship.
Three traffic deaths were recorded in Alabama during the weekend as public safety officials noted heavy traffic yet few reckless drivers. Public Safety Director Bill Lyerly, touring central Alabama highways, said most motorists were driving well and the weekend saw five fatalities overall from various accidents.
