Slay Faces Jury In Baby-Sitter Slaying Case
Franklin Thomas Slay 22 goes on trial Monday in Hopkinsville Kentucky for first degree murder in the hammer slaying of his 16 year old Evansville Indiana sweetheart Mary Elien Harmon. Slay claims a suicide pact and says the girl left Indiana with him but later changed her mind. He was held in Christian County jail and the trial was delayed to March 19.

Mercury Skids To Chilly Forties In Far West Areas
The mercury dropped to the chilly forties in the Far Northwest and Northern Rockies while central and Eastern regions stayed warm and humid. A cool dry air mass moved from the Pacific along the Canadian border toward Northern Minnesota. Thundershowers brought over two inches of rain in parts of the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi Valley, with scattered storms in the Southeast and plains. Elsewhere continued warm humid weather was expected across the Midwest and East. Heavy showers caused some Northeast Iowa streams to flood highways and wash out bridges.

Woman Paroled in Manslaughter Case of Legless Husband
Rebecca Baker, a 53 year old Decatur woman convicted of manslaughter in 1949 for shooting her legless husband Hilliard, was among 19 parolees last week. She claimed self defense after saying he shot at her and tore her clothing before the fatal gunfire.

Williams Denied Bid for New Trial in Swalley Slaying
In Columbiana Alabama on June 24 Charles W Williams pleaded for a new trial in the murder of Frank Swalley a dairyman shot on his home steps last October. Williams a Talladega farm implement dealer received life imprisonment at his prior trial. His daughter Mary Williams had left a New Orleans newspaper job to seek new evidence but none was presented. Judge W W Wallace denied the delay and the new trial. Williams may appeal to the state supreme court. Swalley was killed after returning home from a movie with his family.

A 26 year old Huntsville insurance agent A D Petty was killed when his 1949 Oldsmobile struck the Swan Creek bridge on Highway 31 between 1 and 1 15 A M. The car blocked the road for about two hours and the driver fatally severed a jugular vein. Traffic was detoured as authorities investigated and reported possible dozing at the wheel.

Florence Alabama June 24 two men Earl T. Jacke about 40 and Marvin F. Sharpe were found dead beneath an automobile in a shallow creek bed after a car plunged from a 50 foot bluff in Sharpe's Creek. Dick Moomaw said he and a companion saw the car around 9 30 this morning and returned two hours later to locate the bodies.

Scales Family Hurt In Shelbyville Car Crash
Charles M Scales Jr his wife and Mrs W F Manley Birmingham were seriously injured when their Buick collided head on with a light dump truck driven by James Neese 21 of Shelbyville on the Fayetteville highway near Shelbyville Tennessee. The crash occurred shortly after 5 PM as the Scales party returning from a wedding in Detroit headed to Nashville. Mr Manley sustained only minor injuries. Neese was jailed on drunken driving charges. The four were treated at Bedford county Shelbyville hospital before being moved to Vanderbilt hospital.
