Governor George C. Wallace announced a special-session of the Alabama Legislature to begin next Tuesday afternoon. The session aims to pass a resolution to combine two state referendums that were scheduled for August and September.
Wallace proposes merging two statewide referendums into a single $500 000 vote to save money for the general fund. The plan would hold the one day election on September 13, with each referendum previously costing about $500 000. Current election machinery remains under review as details are finalized.
Wilbert Scott was found guilty of second degree manslaughter in the stabbing death of Jim Mack Jones Jr. at Red's Place in Moulton Heights. He was sentenced to one year in jail and a $500 fine after being charged with first degree murder.
About 800 people signed a petition asking Morgan County to convert the north Courthouse area into a park. The petition, led by the Morgan County Historical Preservation Society, will be presented to the county commission. The panel has debated park plus parking and remained divided on parking needs.
Fuller notes a 15 year old county decision to build a park near the area and argues for a memorial park. The petition signatures largely come from Decatur residents seeking city beautification and community improvement.

The Supreme Court rules states may spend tax dollars on textbooks and certain services for parochial school students. It allows aid up to a limit while barring funding for field trips or equipment. Ohio’s 1975 law would provide up to 88 million dollars in materials and services over two years to private school students.

The last surviving child of a Lawrence County couple was among two killed in area automobile accidents Thursday night. Timothy Bailey Darnell, 17, of Langtown, and Bobby Gene Strickland, 31, of Falkville were killed in separate one car crashes. Darnell died after a 1967 Chevrolet driven by Jimmy Reed Terry, 21, of Langtown, ran off Alabama 33 six miles north of Moulton. Terry and his wife Letha Carol Terry, 19, were in fair condition at Decatur General Hospital with Letha in the intensive care unit. See TWO On Page 10.
