Washington June 24 Revised railroad retirement legislation awaits only President Roosevelt’s signature. Murray W. Latimer of the railroad retirement board says about 55 000 people on private air pension rolls will enter the federal system. The Wagner Crosser bill passed the Senate without opposition, ending litigation over the 1935 act. It provides up to 120 dollars monthly for 1 150 000 railway workers retired for age or disability, with taxes to be shared by roads and employers planned later.

Hartselle Alabama June 24 Special Strawberry growers in Morgan County earned a nice profit this season. Berries were sold with Cullman county fruit and shipped by truck to Cullman then loaded into refrigerated cars for northern markets. Six Vermont railroad workers killed near Swanton
Six members of a Central Vermont railroad section crew from Swanton were killed when a Montreal-bound train struck them three miles north of St Albans Vermont. The dead included T. Co. Clarence Lee Hesler, 26, was placed on five years probation by U S District Judge Charles B Kennamer after a guilty verdict for kidnapping five adults in a drive from LaGrange Georgia to Montgomery Alabama. No sentence was given following the denial of a new trial plea. Hesler abducted his wife Doris Britton Hesler, her parents, and her brother and his wife at gunpoint on April 10. He defended himself by offering letters allegedly written by his wife.
