TVA Eyes Growth in Lower Tennessee Valley Commercial Harvest
TVA official Chance reports 1965 harvest statewide over 511000 acres water with Cherokee and Douglas reservoirs. Total fish harvest fell 1.4 million pounds from 1964 due to a Kentucky Lake viral disease killing about 7.5 million pounds of buffalo drum and carp and a 12 percent drop in commercial fishermen. Catfish buffalo and carp made 91 percent of the total while over 400000 pounds of shad were taken mainly as fish bait. TVA aims to raise the region’s commercial harvest to about 60 million pounds annually and continues to develop gear and markets with state fisheries personnel.
